Because, according to Stephen Hawking, humanity is at risk of being wiped out by technology.

The physicist, who has spoken out about the dangers of artificial intelligence in the past, said that technology must be controlled to safeguard our future.

He claims that a ‘world government’ could be our only hope.

However he believes that it would create more problems for itself and ‘become a tyranny’.

Speaking to the Times, he said: ‘Since civilisation began, aggression has been useful inasmuch as it has definite survival advantages.

‘It is hard-wired into our genes by Darwinian evolution.

‘Now, however, technology has advanced at such a pace that this aggression may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war. We need to control this inherited instinct by our logic and reason.’

Just last year, Stephen Hawking said he feared that robots had the potential to evolve faster that the human race.

He said: ‘Once machines reach a critical stage of being able to evolve themselves we cannot predict whether their goals will be the same as ours.’

However, despite all of these worries the professor said he is confident that the human race will ‘rise to meet these challenges’.
