An Indian green court has ruled that airlines that dump human waste during flights will face fines, according to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday (Dec 21).

Planes will be subject to surprise checks on landing, and airlines will have to pay a fine of 50,000 rupees (US$735) every time their human waste tanks are found empty, the report said.

The ruling by the National Green Tribunal comes after New Delhi resident Satwant Singh Dahiya, who lives near the airport, filed a case in October saying that houses in his neighbourhood were damaged by faeces dumped by planes at night.

"We found walls and floors of terrace of our house splattered with large patches of excreta dumped by aircraft flying in front of Palam airport at night,” Dahiya said in his petition, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle.

Dahiya also said he has had to spend 50,000 rupees to repaint the entire exterior of his house.

In December last year, a 60-year-old woman fractured her shoulder after she was hit by suspected falling human excreta, the Times of India newspaper reported.

The tribunal also ordered the country’s aviation safety regulator to maintain a helpline to take complaints on human waste falling from the skies, the Bloomberg report said.

Human waste from aircraft toilets are stored in tanks, which are normally emptied at airports by ground crew. However, there are cases where leakages occur in the air due to technical faults, the report said.
