Five youths arrested over Punggol Waterway fire
The five, aged between 14 and 20, were arrested on Saturday night after a fire at the park spread to an area about the size of two basketball courts.

SINGAPORE: Five boys aged between 14 and 20 have been arrested for allegedly causing a fire at the Punggol Waterway Park on Saturday night (Jan 30).

The fire, which spread to an area about the size of two basketball courts, caused damage to the park, and “it was fortunate that no one was injured in the fire”, the Punggol Neighbourhood Police Centre said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

The police received a call informing them of a fire at Punggol Waterway at about 10.49pm on Saturday, the post said. The five were subsequently arrested for their involvement in a case of mischief by fire, it said.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it deployed two fire engines and two Red Rhinos to the scene, and extinguished the fire using three waterjets.

Fire at punggol waterway park last night. As the way to lor halus bridge was blocked, I had to cycle a big round to the HDB blocks to get to the main road then to popeyes. The fire had spread and got bigger when crossing the bridge to farmway. If this is an arson/mischief case, punishment must be severe for destroying such a nice place.

Facebook user Tay Wei Cheng, who shared a video of the fire, said the boys had been playing with firecrackers.

Police investigations are ongoing.
