SINGAPORE: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Singapore on Friday (Nov 6) for a two-day state visit, as the countries mark 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties. He is accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan and several other high-ranking officials.

Singapore's Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat was on hand to welcome President Xi and Mdm Peng at the Changi Airport VIP Complex. This is Mr Xi's first state visit to Singapore. The last time he visited the country was in 2010, when he was China's Vice-President.

Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam received Mr Xi at the Istana, where they both inspected a guard of honour ahead of a state banquet on Friday evening. Ahead of dinner, Mr Xi paid a courtesy call to Dr Tan, flanked by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, Mr Heng, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing and National Development Minister Lawrence Wong.

Mr Xi meantime, had on his side, Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng, State Councillor Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central, Committee of CPC (CCCPC) Wang Huning and Member of the Political Bureau of the CCCPC Li Zhanshu, as well as Ambassador to Singapore Chen Xiaodong.

During the state banquet, Dr Tan described Mr Xi as an "old friend" of Singapore and said it is remarkable how bilateral relations have developed in breadth and depth over a short span of 25 years.

"Singapore's confidence in China's future is best reflected in the continuous flow of our investments in China," he said, noting that Singapore has been China's largest foreign investor for the last two years and China has been Singapore's largest trading partner since 2013.*

Dr Tan expressed confidence that China would continue to succeed under Mr Xi's leadership. "What our two countries share is a unique bilateral relationship built upon wide-ranging cooperation that evolves with the times according to our changing developmental priorities and capabilities. I am confident that together we can bring our relationship to even greater heights by continuing our collaboration in a pragmatic, constructive and innovative way for the mutual benefit of both our countries and people," he said.

"I'm glad to see that the tree of China-Singapore cooperation planted and nurtured by the pioneer generations of our leaders has borne rich fruits," Mr Xi said in his speech at the dinner.

President Xi announced that the third Singapore-China government-to-government project will be in the Chinese city of Chongqing. Officials had earlier said the project will focus on modern connectivity and modern services, but had not announced the location. Singapore and China already have joint projects in Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-city and Mr Xi said both are progressing well.

"China-Singapore ties have reached a new level of development," Mr Xi declared. "With the establishment of an all-round partnership that keeps pace with times, China will work with Singapore to seize the momentum in our political trust and deepen practical cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit and strengthen the coordination and collaboration on international and global issues."

On Saturday, the Chinese President is also expected to witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and will deliver a lecture at the National University of Singapore.

In the afternoon, President Xi and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou will sit down for a landmark meeting facilitated by Singapore. This would be the first time since 1949 that the leaders of China and Taiwan are meeting.
