A two-year-old girl in Southern China astonishingly suffered only minor injuries after falling from a fifth floor flat after her mother left her unattended without locking the balcony door, a local newspaper reported.

Witnesses said the girl, who fell from the top floor of the apartment block in Guangzhou at 8am on Thursday, had her fall broken by electrical wires on the second floor then landed on a car before falling to the ground, the New Express Daily reported.

A neighbour, surnamed Wu, found the crying girl sitting on the footpath with only scratches on her hips and bruises on her legs.

“But she seemed to be ok,” Wu said. Other people came to comfort her and encouraged her to walk a few steps. The girl’s mother arrived 10 minutes later. After making sure her daughter was not seriously, she asked neighbours to take care of her then ran back to her flat, saying there was another child at home.

Doctors at a nearby hospital examined the little girl but found she could walk and talk normally. She remained under observation until the afternoon.

People in the neighbourhood told the newspaper that the girl’s father worked in a factory nearby and the mother cared for two children at home.

That morning, the mother went to buy groceries while the children were asleep, but did not lock the door to the balcony, a mistake that nearly ended in tragedy.
