Thumbs up Halimah To Students Play-Acting As MPs: MPs Are Not Jiak Liao Bees, okay?

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

SINGAPORE: Ninety students from junior colleges, polytechnics and universities played ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday (Jul 20), as part of this year's Singapore Model Parliament.

Held for the fourth year running, these mock Parliamentary sittings aim to introduce youths to the basics of Singapore's Parliamentary processes. They will also get the chance to learn how Parliament makes legislation and debates national issues.

This year, the bills that are up for debate over three days of sittings are the Sedition (Amendment) Bill, the Central Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill and the Prevention of Human Trafficking Bill.

Officiating the session was Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob. She said Parliament is not a theatre; instead, it must be effective and has to consist of MPs who are dedicated to improving the lives of Singaporeans.

"Regardless of which political party the MPs belong to or where they stand on issues, the MPs are all joined by only one purpose, and that is to serve the people of Singapore with sincerity and honesty," she said.
