Alcoholic jailed 12 weeks for assaulting bus driver and passenger

A 30 year old alcoholic Singaporean, Ivan Abraham Michel, has been jailed 12 weeks today for hitting a SMRT bus driver once on his back and later boarded another bus and fought with a passenger. The double assault took place on two different bus service, 171 and 173, along Jelebu Road at Bukit Panjang around 1.20pm on March 10 this year.

Ivan, who was also formerly convicted for being a member of an unlawful assembly, boarded bus 171 at Bukit Panjang Plaza and started shouting in the bus, to which the SMRT bus driver told him to lower his volume. Ivan became enraged and started scolding the bus driver then hit him once on the back. A SMRT ticket inspector who witnessed the incident called the police. The troublemaker then alighted and boarded another bus, 173, to avoid the police. This time, he confronted a 27 year old man, Md Ismail Abdul Latif Ramalingam, whom he claimed were staring at him. The two went into a quarrel and Ivan punched Md Ismail on the head. Md Ismail suffered a head injury and a broken little finger. The police was called again, this time by another witness.
The police arrested Ivan and tested Ivan’s breath with a breathalyzer which recorded an alcohol level twice the legal limit for drink driving.
In January 23 this year, Ivan who was on bail for throwing a laundry rack from the second floor of Block 226 Pending Road where he lived, pushed his neighbour’s flower pot off the level two’s ledge after drinking and quarreling with his mother over his drinking habit.
