Editor’s note – 5th May 2015

admin / 8 hours ago May 5, 2015

Singapore’s approved news media, Channel News Asia today published a molest case of a 28 year old accused who have committed outrage of modesty in Sengkang and Punggol since January this year. However the man was unidentified by the mainstream media even though his acts clearly makes him an immediate danger to females around him.

Such anonymity granted by the SIngapore mainstream media to accused who pose a danger to public safety is not new. Recently a 49 year old man in red shirt was caught on video slapping 16 year old Amos Yee while the latter was on his way to court for a hearing. The man was subsequently caught by the police and even hauled to court, but the Singapore mainstream media refuse to disclose his identity.

Yet for offenders who embarrassed the Singapore Government politically, like Roy Ngnerg, Amos Yee, the TRS editors and the Workers Party, they are given front page coverage and dedicated follow-up treatment. While such intense coverage for these people may not be politically motivated, the contrast in treatment compared to the sex offenders clearly show that Singapore’s mainstream media is biased and incapable of self-censorship.

The Media Development Authority is equally guilty either for condoning such irresponsible reporting, and yet they have the audacity to preach media literacy and responsible journalism.
Such is the sad state of affairs in Singapore. They truly deserve to be ranked 153rd in press freedom.

I like to thank readers for supporting Straits Times Review and I aim to make this site a truly independent and responsible media.
