SINGAPORE - He may be famous for being a 'rich kid of Instagram' but 22-year-old Sheikh Shujah says he gave up his rebellious ways after serving National Service with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

The half-Burmese-half-Singaporean son of oil tycoon Sheikh Babu Nooruddin revealed in an interview with Nextshark that he used to have a rebellious streak, and loved to party even though his parents were strict.

While he grew up with a 'golden spoon', Sheikh Shujah says his parents were strict and often reminded him about being contented with what he had.

"But as a young teenager, all I wanted to do was party and be with my friends; all the strict rules my family implemented just made me rebel. But everyone makes mistakes, and it's crucial to learn from them," he said.

He told the online magazine that his experience in the SCDF changed his perspectives on life, and made him think about how much trouble he was putting his family through.

He recalled meeting other young men who had to shoulder the burden of their family's finances while also serving the nation.

After being promoted to company sergeant major, Sheikh Shujah learned of the plight of many people from poorer backgrounds and was inspired to turn his life around.

"Going through all this made me wonder why I put my family through so much trouble, and I decided to make a change then and there," he told Nextshark.

After completing his NS, Sheikh Shujah studied finance in university and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

He then co-founded Jadeite Technologies and is now CEO of the firm.

He is also well-known for being a watch lover who often shows off his collection of luxury watches on Instagram.

However, this should not be mistaken with extravagance, he said. "I'm passionate about watches and fashion, so I like to post pictures about watches and the finer things in life - just like a food blogger likes to post pictures about food".
