Man removed by police over staying in hospital for over three years

Feb 12, 2015

A man who has spent over three years in a bed in Jingmei Group Hospital was removed by police on Tuesday afternoon after a court ordered him to leave.

The patient, surnamed Chen, has been at the hospital since October 2011. He was in a car crash in August of that year and was sent to Jingmei Hospital for treatment. He was discharged a month later, but returned in October due to swelling in his legs. The doctors treated him and attempted to send him home three months later- but Chen had other ideas.

He refused to leave, saying that he was in too much pain and stayed in the hospital bed for the next three years. He even missed his son’s wedding because he refused to leave.

During his stay, Chen has received more than 20 notices to leave the hospital and accumulated medical bills of around 2 million RMB, which he hasn’t paid. He still insists that he needs treatment and has dismissed doctor’s medical assessments and test results as false.

When police arrived to take him on Tuesday, they found that he had chained himself to the bed in one final attempt to stay in the bed. He was forcibly removed in the afternoon after police cut the chains he’d used to lock himself up.

Chen was extremely distressed as he was escorted home by the authorities, still insisting that he needs care.
