PETALING JAYA - The Prime Minister is down with an E. coli bacterial infection but he is certainly not out.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has pledged to carry on overseeing flood relief efforts in affected areas despite his illness.

"I will continue to monitor flood relief operations from home," he wrote on his official Twitter account @NajibRazak.

Earlier, the Prime Minister's Office tweeted that Najib was receiving medical treatment and would be taking a short break from work.

"PM@NajibRazak terkena jangkitan E. coli semasa lawat kwsn banjir. Doktor nasihat supaya berehat. Beliau akn kembali bertugas secepat mungkin. (PM@NajibRazak was infected by E. coli during his visit to flood-affected areas. Doctors have advised him to rest. He will return to his duties as soon as possible)," the tweet read.

E. coli or Escherichia coli is a bacteria that is widely found in the human intestine.

Although most strains are harmless, certain strains can cause mild to severe food poisoning symptoms.

Infection is through intake of contaminated water or food.

Najib had cut short his 2014 year-end leave and returned to Malaysia on Dec 27 to oversee emergency response to the flood situation, mainly in the east coast states.

He visited several states that were badly affected, including worst-hit areas in Kelantan.

More than 200,000 people were evacuated at the height of the floods.
