Thumbs up An SMRT train was found vandalised with graffiti at Bishan depot on Saturday morning.

An SMRT train was found vandalised with graffiti at Bishan depot on Saturday morning.

SINGAPORE: Graffiti was discovered on the exterior of an SMRT train at Bishan depot early Saturday (Nov 8) morning, before the train was put into service.

In a statement on Saturday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the incident has been reported to the Police. LTA added that it takes a serious view of the incident and is working with the Police and SMRT on the investigations. This is believed to be the fourth vandalism incident involving the SMRT in four years.

Police said they were alerted to the incident at 6.41am. A case of vandalism had been reported at the premise along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. They added that investigations are ongoing.

The first incident happened in May 2010 when two vandals cut through the fence of SMRT's Changi depot and spray-painted graffiti on a train. One of them, a Swiss expatriate Oliver Fricker, was jailed for seven months and given three strokes of the cane, while his accomplice, Briton Lloyd Dane Alexander, remains at large.

The second incident was in August 2011 when a hole was cut in the fence at the Bishan depot, and the words "Jet Setter's" were spray-painted on one of the trains. The third incident took place on May 5 this year also at Bishan depot.

In this case graffiti was apparently spray-painted on a train's middle carriage. SMRT has previously been fined S$200,000 and S$50,000 for the first two separate security breaches at its depots.
