Background story: Indonesian Fighter Jets intercept a Singapore Plane flying illegally in their Airspace

A plane belonging to ST Aerospace was fined Rp60 million (S$6,300) on Wednesday for illegally flying into Indonesian airspace.

The plane had been intercepted by Indonesian fighter jets after it entered Indonesian airspace without the proper approvals and it had been forced to land at a military airbase.

The three Singaporeans on board the Australian-registered aircraft were then held for over 20 hours and questioned on why they had been flying in Indonesian airspace.

An ST Aerospace spokesperson explained that their top priority was to get aircraft and crew back into Singapore and they had been working with the authorities on the matter.
Indonesian news portals had quoted Colonel Tedi Rizalhadi, Commander of the Supadio Pontianak Air Base, as saying: "In line with the laws and the decision by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, they were fined Rp60 million which goes into the State Treasury, for entering the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) without permission."




Their investigations had concluded that the plane posed no danger to Indonesia and so it was released to return to Singapore.

The plane returned to Seletar Airport at 7:18pm on Wednesday evening.

It is understood that the plane was on a training flight with two trainee pilots on board with an instructor.

ST Aerospace said that they had filed the flight plan with the Authorities already but it is not known why these plans were not passed on and approved with Indonesian authorities.

When the plane entered Indonesian airspace for the second time during the return journey to Singapore, the Indonesian military sent out fighter jets to intercept the aircraft.
