Singapore and China are planning to start another government-to-government project in the West of China similar to the industrial parks already at Suzhou and Tianjin.

To facilitate this, Singapore will aim to complete a feasibility study of the project by the end of next year.

This study will include deciding on possible concepts, locations and programmes to be undertaken as part of the joint project.

DPM Teo explained during his trip to China that, currently they are planning to either collaborate on a modern connectivity or modern services project but talks are still only in early stages.

Already, Singapore is China’s biggest foreign investor and China is Singapore’s biggest trade partner. With these further government to government collaborations, it is hoped that both countries can benefit even further from good relations.

Chan Chun Sing, the Minister for Social and Family Development will co-chair a ministerial committee to study the possibility of a third Singapore-China joint project.

Some possible locations include Chongqing, Chengdu or Xi’an and the project is going to be in line with China’s development priorities.

“It’s not just about developing an industrial park, because if that’s the case, the Chinese are very capable of doing that,” said Mr Chan.

“We are trying to see which areas we can develop enablers for economic activities, for financial activities, to take off in the western region.”
