MAN WHO SERVED 10YRS IN JAIL TURNS LIFE AROUND AND IS NOW A LAWYER .node-article .field-name-link-line-above-tags{float: right;}.node-article .field-name-ad-box-in-article {float: left;margin: 15px 15px 10px 0;}.node-article .field-tags{clear: both;} Post date: 26 Aug 2014 - 10:55am 35 year old ex-con Darren Tan has a truly inspiring success story, as he was able to turn his life around and is now a fully fledged lawyer. Mr Tan spent 10 years in jail and got 19 strokes of the cane for drug and gang related activities. He was in and out of prison since the age of 14 for drug and robbery charges. His longest sentence was when he was put in jail at age 25, already the third time he had been in the system. But this time was different as he found God and decided it was time to turn his life around. He took advantage of the Prison’s program for education and resumed his studies. He re-learned English and aced his A Levels with 4As and a B with A1 in General Paper. He applied to get into NUS Law while he was still in prison and he became the first ever ex-con to enter NUS Law. He continued his success in studies and was called to the Bar at a ceremony on Sunday at NTU. In an interview with the Straits Times, he said that "This is the culmination of what I've been working towards for the last 10 years. It's like waking up from a dream and finding out your dream has become reality." He already had a job waiting for him at TSMP Law Corporation where he did his 6-month practice training. He is going to be working in the field of commercial litigation and dispute resolution. The firm’s managing director, Mr Thio Shen Yi, said that he had originally taken a chance with Mr Tan when he accepted him for the 6 month training program but he definitely proved that he had earned the job. Mr Thio described Tan as sincere, with street smarts, maturity and lots of EQ. This is Mr Tan’s first real job and with the steady pay, he can finally help around the house with expenses and has really turned his life around. He explained that he used to take drugs because there was a void in his life, but now, how life has filled that void and he is finally happy.
