I always thought bleeding after sex is a sign of virgin.

But my female friend say it's not. Bleeding might occur when she haven't had sex for a long time too.

How can I tell?

You check the vagina hole's hymen still intact or not. Usually virgin's got one very small hole like 5mm diameter.

There's no way to tell a virgin. Even if the hymen is there does not means she'll a virgin as some doctors does hymen restoration for woman who wants to be a "virgin" again. Many young girls who're active in sports or cycling tears their hymen in the process. You'll still be considered a virgin as long as you've never had sexual intercourse before. You can have heavy petting but no intercourse then you'll still be considered a virgin.
