LUI TUCK YEW: WE ONLY COLLECTED $152 MILLION FROM ERPS LAST YEAR Post date: 13 Mar 2015 - 8:06am Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew shared that the government's revenue from Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) collections fell to only $152 million last year. Back in 2013 and for several years before that, they collected $160 million quite consistently. He blamed the opening of the Marina Coastal Expressway for the drop in ERP revenue. Due to the eased congestion on the ECP following the opening of the MCE, ERP rates on both expressways were lowered meaning that the government collected less in total. Minister Lui shared this in response to a question posted by several MPs who proposed to adjust the current ERP Rates on certain roads. He also explained that ERP rates are determined by the optimum speed and how congestion has impacted this optimum speed. Currently, the optimum speed for expressways is set to 45km/hr to 65 km/hr. When congestion between certain times causes the average speed to be lower than this, the ERP rates will be revised upward. Similarly, if speeds are consistently faster than this, ERP rates during those times will be lowered or removed. For arterial roads, the optimum speed is 20km/hr to 30km/hr. The whole ERP scheme is intended to distribute congestion by encouraging some motorists to take cheaper roads and be rewarded with less congestion and less ERP fees. This is a revenue and congestion control method on top of the highly price COEs to limit the car population. It is clear that both of these generate significant revenues for the government each year.
