Ghana book semi-final spot February 5, 2012 Ghana r just 2 wins away fr a 1st ANC crown since 1982 aft booking their place in the semi-finals with a 2-1 extra-time win over Tunisia. In a game tat was often scrappy & marred by a number of arguments betw both sets of players over alleged stray arms & elbows, it was Goran Stevanovic's men who kept their cool & won thru 2 a semi-final with Zambia thanks 2 Andre Ayew's 101st-minute goal. When tat came it was a gift fr Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi, who shelled Samuel Inkoom's cross in2 the striker's path. Prior 2 tat, John Mensah's 10th-minute header 4 Ghana had been cancelled out by Saber Khelifa b4 half-time. But on weight of chances Ghana deserved 2 win, with their route 2 the finish line eased by Aymen Abdennour's sending-off 4 an elbow on Ayew. Tat incident, which came 18 mins in2 extra time, caused the game 2 end on an unsavoury note - something which had looked unlikely when Mensah opened the scoring, heading in @ the back post aft Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu's corner was flicked into his path by Kwadwo Asamoah. Hosts Gabon suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak as Mali prevented them fr reaching a 1st ANC semi-final in Libreville. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed the only penalty of the shoot-out, which ended 5-4 to Mali, & the Gabon striker broke down in tears aft Barcelona playmaker Seydou Keita netted the winning spot-kick 4 Mali. It was cruel on Gabon who had been on the verge of progressing thanks 2 Eric Mouloungui's 55th-minute opener only 4 Cheick Diabate 2 equalise with 6 mins left in normal time. Mali had Modibo Maiga sent off moments later but Gabon failed 2 make their 1-man advantage count in extra-time b4 crashing out in the shoot-out. |

Re: Africa Cup of Nations 2012

African Nations Cup semi-final preview A life less ordinary February 7, 2012 Almost anywhere in the world u can get a t-shirt with a variation of the expression, "Football is life, everything else is only detail," emblazoned on it. In most places the actual meaning of tat slogan is nothing. It's cute, it's catchy, it speaks 2 the dedication, commitment, passion & even obsession of lovers of the game but it still does not amount 2 anything but words. Sometimes, only sometimes, it does. The 2012 African Nations Cup (ANC) is 1 of those times. In tis tournament, football has stood 4 life. Not the life tat u see in a fan who has spotted themselves on the big screen or in the players tat run more in 90 mins than some people do in 9 years. Life tat some r willing 2 risk 4 the freedom of a nation, life tat can & has been taken with a 9mm gun as carelessly as a misdirected pass on the pitch. Life tat footballers r campaigning 2 save. When the event started, Libya's Walid al Khartoushi was the lifesaver, so 2 speak. He fought on the frontline with the rebels in the country's recent revolution & was lauded as a war hero. The team managed 2 qualify despite the troubles in their homeland. They exited the tournament aft the group stage, despite valiant attempts 2 make it to the last 8, which included a draw with Zambia & victory over Senegal. They were not the only team 2 hv 2 compete in the shadows of conflict. Senegal played knowing their homeland was enraged by a court decision which would allow their president 2 run 4 a 3rd term. Protests in Dakar resulted in civilians clashing with police, tyres were burned, tear gas was sprayed, tanks rolled thru the streets & dozens were injured. Tunisia had their own revolution throughout their qualification campaign, Burkina Faso's played out as an army mutiny entered its 4th city & civilians joined in 2 show their dissatisfaction with high food prices. Sudan played as damning human rights reports were released on the cost 2 human life in the secession & formation of South Sudan. More than 100,000 people were displaced & famine affected most of the region. Now, 2 of the 4 semi-finalists will also play against a backdrop of internal strife. Ivory Coast r still recovering fr a bloody 2011 when outgoing president Laurent Gbagbo refused 2 step down & more than 3,000 were killed in resultant fighting. Although Alasanne Outtara is now safely in power, the reconciliation process is still ongoing. Mali's wounds r fresher. The Tuareg rebels hv resumed their separatist war which had broken out in bursts b4, in the early 90s & betw 2007 & 2009. Gadaffi is believed 2 hv sponsored their 2nd uprising & many of them spent time in Libya, propping up the Colonel's regime, b4 returning 2 north-eastern Mali, with arms, when his regime fell. Last weekend, @ least 20 people were killed in the area around Timbuktu, starting wat has quickly become a crisis in the country. Doctors Without Borders hv withdrawn, becos the situation is 2 dangerous 4 them, food is in short supply & the country is being pushed 2 the brink. War is imminent & 1 need not look further than the look Seydou Keita's eyes 2 see how terrifying tat thought is. Aft Mali beat Gabon 5-4 on penalties following a deadlocked quarter-final, Keita made an impassioned plea 2 the authorities in his home land. "I'm appealing 2 the ppl 2 stop," Keita said. "It's not normal, we don't do tat. We need peace, we r all Malians. The president of the Republic needs 2 do the most he can 2 stop it. We r celebrating our win but @ the same time we feel very sad. There is a sadness among the players." Keita started the tournament raising awareness 4 the Sahel region, an area tat stretches across North Africa, which has been hit by a food crisis. He is ending it appealing 4 the lives of people in Mali. Whether the national team go on 2 win the Cup or bow out 2 1 of the pre-tournament fav Ivory Coast will not matter. Keita has raised awareness & even though most football fans can do nothing abt the situation in Mali, the mere fact tat they know tat voices will start spreading the word & ears will listen is good enough. On the field, Mali hv been the least convincing of the last 4. They were fortunate 2 knock out the co-hosts, who played as though they wanted it more. Only when they hv been forced 2 perform better, hv they actually done it - in their come fr behind win over Botswana in the group stage. They're strong in midfield but probably not strong enough & against an Ivory Coast side which has wat they feel is a destiny 2 fulfil, they may need more than just ordinary strength 2 progress. Keita was correct when he said his team hv nothing 2 lose & the pressure is on their opposition, who hv not been continental champions since 1992. Mali hv been told 2 hv no fear & 2 mix humility & ambition in the right combination 2 ensure enjoyment is the result of their efforts. The pundits 1 2 see an Ivorian-Ghanian final, so the likes of Didier Drogba & the Toure brothers can hv a shot @ a cup 4 country rather than club & the Black Stars can complete a journey tat started @ the 2010 World Cup, when they became the team for all of Africa. There's no national discord in Ghana but aft their fairytale showing in South Africa, there's a little bit of Ghanian in all the continent & 1 gets the feeling every1 will be slightly pleased if they win. Zambia hv other plans as they look 2 pay homage 2 the team which fell in the 1993 airplane disaster. The country has not had a major achievement on the football field 2 celebrate since tat tragedy & the class of 2012 1 2 pay their respects the only way sportsmen know how. 4 them, & the other teams competing in the business end of the tournament, football is life, the rest is just detail. |

Senegal sack Traore after ANC failure February 8, 2012 Amara Traore has been relieved of his duties as Senegal coach aft the country's humiliating showing @ the 2012 African Nations Cup. Boasting arguably the continent's most potent strikeforce in Moussa Sow, Demba Ba, Papiss Demba Cisse & Mamadou Niang, Senegal were among the pre-tournament favourites. But the Teranga Lions flattered 2 deceive in Equatorial Guinea, losing all 3 games against Zambia, Equatorial Guinea & Libya, finishing bottom of Group A - their worst ever performance @ the finals. Aft the embarrassing group stage exit, the writing was on the wall 4 Traore, who was part of the Senegal squad tat famously reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002. "It was a failure & it is the coach's responsibility," Senegalese Football Federation president Augustin Senghor said. "Decisions had 2 be taken & the executive committee has decided 2 end its collaboration with the coach & his backup staff." The Teranga Lions' build-up 2 the Nations Cup was overshadowed by a contract wrangle betw the federation & Traore, with the governing body seemingly in no doubt tat the dispute contributed 2 the poor showing @ the finals. Karim Sega & captain of the 2002 Senegal side Aliou Cisse hv been named as caretaker coaches 4 Senegal's friendly against South Africa in Durban on February 29. |

Zambia shock Ghana to reach final February 8, 2012 Zambia booked their place in the ANC final aft substitute Emmanuel Mayuka's goal gave them a surprise 1-0 win over Ghana - 1 of the fav 2 win the tournament. Ghana 4ward Asamoah Gyan, whose missed penalty @ the 2010 World Cup cost his team a place in the semi-finals, saw his spot kick saved aft 8th-mins @ the Estadio de Bata & it was 2 prove costly 1s again. Although the Black Stars dominated the match they struggled 2 create real chances & Mayuka scored against the run of play in the 78th minute . Ghana midfielder Derek Boateng was sent off 6 mins fr time aft a 2nd yellow card. The Copper Bullets will face either Ivory Coast or Mali, who play their semi-final later on Wednesday night, in the final in Libreville. |
