Jane had packed her luggage for her upcoming company retreat in JB — three days of seminars, team-building activities, and socializing with colleagues. She had told me about it earlier in the month, nothing unusual, as her company had overseas retreats each year around the same time. What drew my suspicions was that her past retreats were typically two days, over the weekends. As her department was in sales, they were unable to extend their stays to Mondays, a production day. Of course, I didn't know better.
Communications with her over the three days were short, she wanted to leverage on the hotel wifi and hence did not buy an overseas data plan. She came back, nothing out of the ordinary, but had an acute gastric attack. She told me it was due to the spicy food she ate there, and her tolerance to spicy food was quite low.
I could feel there was more to the story, something she wasn’t telling me. I knew her well enough to sense when she was holding back. And that was the part that lingered with me—the not knowing. To this day, I did not figure out what exactly had happened. Perhaps I was overthinking, I was getting sensitive, perhaps.
Or perhaps I can post the question to the bros here. What does everyone think could have happened then? Could there be more to the gastric pain she experienced? Gather collective wisdom, and explore a new way of writing. More updates to come, albeit this one being short
