Foreign tourists giving Ho Chi Minh City a miss

Ho Chi Minh City is losing its status as a tourism hub in the country, with many foreign visitors choosing to bypass it and fly directly to more attractive, safer spots.

Figures from the city tourism department show that there were 3.8 million foreign arrivals last year 2012, or just 56 percent of all visitors to Vietnam, down from more than 60 percent in the past.

Many hotels have been reporting poor business since last year, saying one reason for this is that visitors to other destinations in Vietnam, who earlier used to stay in the city at least on their first and last days in the country, no longer do so.

Travel industry insiders admit that visitors have probably realized that the city is not an attractive enough destination to offset its poor infrastructure and lack of security.

Robert Tan, a Singaporean working in the Vietnamese tourism industry, said Ho Chi Minh City is losing its position as the country’s tourism hub when it was the arrival and departure point for almost all international flights.

Foreign tourists then used to fly into the city before traveling to other places, he said.

But Vietnam’s poor traffic infrastructure plus the economic situation has made such multi-day tours unpopular and people have started to choose particular destinations, he said.

That new option has been made even more convenient with other hotspots developing their own airports, he said.

Hanoi has always been a major international destination.

There are now regular flights to Da Nang from Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Shanghai, and charter flights from Beijing, Taipei, Tokyo and Novosibirsk, Russia’s third largest city in population.

There are also international flights to Cam Ranh near Nha Trang.

Tan said foreign tourists who want a place to relax and sightsee do not consider Ho Chi Minh City an ideal place, yet the city has failed to make itself competitive in other kinds of tourism.

It could follow other major cities in the region like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, which have developed artificial tourism products like cheap shopping, sporting events, food-related products, and amusement centers, besides traditional cultural products, he said.

He described Ben Thanh’s night market, once a magnet for foreign tourists, as a gathering of low-quality eateries and shops selling fakes or copycats, all reaching out to tourists with scary insistence.

The city has some shops selling handicrafts, but they are too small for several buses to stop at one time, while tax-free shops do not cater to a diversity of shopping interests and there is almost no entertainment at night, he said.

Phan Dinh Hue, director of the city-based Vong Tron Viet (Viet Circle) tourism company, said the city is losing out not only to other destinations in the country, but also to Laos and Cambodia.

It does have a “big advantage” as a transit point for tourists going to Cambodia, who can travel from the city by air, river, or road.

“But all are poor, especially roads. Moc Bai border gate (in neighboring Tay Ninh Province) is underdeveloped and the staff are slow with immigration and customs procedures.”

La Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the city tourism department, lamented, “Tourists are abandoning [the city].”

The city should make itself indispensable at least as a shopping hotspot, making use of its resources as the country’s commercial capital, he said.

“Tourists coming to Vietnam must think about going to Ho Chi Minh City for shopping.”

But Tan said before the city tries to improve its services, it needs to improve safety since mugging has become a major deterrent for foreign visitors.

Smoking kills 100 people in Vietnam every day

Smoking-related diseases kill over 40,000 people in Vietnam each year and if no measure is taken, nearly 10 percent of the Vietnamese population will have died from smoking-related diseases by 2030, the Ho Chi Minh City Health Education and Communication Center warned.

The warning, based on the estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO), was released by the Ho Chi Minh City Health Education and Communication Center to mark the date the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms took effect - May 1.

Smoking is one the leading causes of death in Vietnam, with more than 100 people dead from tobacco-related diseases per day, four times higher than the death toll of road traffic accidents.

Vietnam is among the countries having the highest rates of male tobacco smokers in the world, and is also one of the countries where smoking in public places are popular, affecting the health of non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smokes, according to WHO.

According to the 2010 global adult tobacco survey, out of two Vietnamese people over 15 years old, one is addicted to tobacco.

Smoking-related fatal diseases like stroke, coronary artery, lung cancer are the leading causes of death for both men and women in Vietnam.

Vietnam, with a population of nearly 89 million now, is one of the 15 countries having the highest rates of tobacco users in the world, particularly men, said Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen at a conference on April 23.

About 11 percent of male deaths have been caused by smoking, according to a survey by the Health Strategy and Policy Institute.

WHO warns that the number of deaths would rise to 70,000 cases in 2030 if there are no effective measures in response to smoking in Vietnam.

47 million second-hand smokers at home in Vietnam

In Vietnam, according to the above-mentioned global adult tobacco survey, about 8 million workers suffer from passive smoking at working places, and as many as 47 million people are regularly exposed to smoking at home.

A cigarette shortens life span by 5.5 minutes

Meanwhile, scientists warn that smoking a cigarette causes a loss of 5.5 minutes of life expectancy. The average life span of smokers is 5-8 years shorter than non-smokers.

In women, smoking may cause infertility, premature menopause, ectopic pregnancy, pre-birth fetal death, miscarriage, and cervix cancer. Smoking when in pregnancy may lead to underweight of newborns, premature birth, and after-birth hemorrhage.

Taxi driver fined VND20 million for overcharging foreign tourists

VietNamNet Bridge – A representative of the Hanoi-based Trung Viet Taxi firm has apologized to and returned the money to an Australian couple who had to pay nearly VND1 million ($47) for a 7km journey in Hanoi.

In the afternoon of April 30, the police of Cau Giay District, Hanoi, summoned a taxi driver named Cuong of Trung Viet Taxi for investigation of an act of overcharging. At the police station, the driver accepted that he claimed more fares than regulations and promised a refund.

According to Mr. Do Dung Thu, an inspector of Trung Viet Taxi, the company apologized to the Australian couple, David Patrick and his wife Brandi Dawn Burmey, and terminated the contract with the driver. The company also imposed a fine of VND20 million ($1,000) on the driver. This is the highest fine for a taxi driver for the act of overcharging.

Back from the Ha Long Bay and getting the refund, the Australian young couple was glad and thanked Vietnamese friends, especially the receptionist of the Vietnam Ethnology Museum who shared the story to the media and the Hanoi authorities who had quick response.
