Women forced to have sex with Bakun workers

MIRI : Local and foreign women are believed to have been abused as sex workers to "service and keep happy" the thousands of workers working in and around the RM6bil (US$1.72bil) Bakun hydro-electric dam project site in the deep interior of central Sarawak.

These workers are mostly foreigners and total more than 2,000. The women are made up of local women as well as foreign women who were brought in from neighbouring countries.

Yesterday, the state police busted one syndicate supplying sex workers to this project site, located in the Belaga district in Kapit Division, some 400km south of here.

The Star has learned that there is a possibility that these “sex-for-labour” activities in the region are widespread, with mobile units of sex workers being moved around by gangsters and crime lords to not only serve workers at the dam site, but also in timber and oil palm plantations in the region.

The Bakun dam project encompasses more than 60,000 hectares, an area the size of the whole of Singapore.

Bakun sex slaves cry for help

MIRI : Gangsters are believed to be holding several foreign women as sex slaves at the giant Bakun dam site, in remote central Sarawak, and the women are crying for help through SMSes to The Star.

Their fear and desperation were also expressed in text messages about a grave the women had found with a crossed-stake planted on it.

The grave served as a chilling reminder that there was no way out but death for those who defied the gangsters.

A non-governmental organisation came to know about their plight and gave the women the telephone number of this reporter.

A woman, who has been sending the messages and making calls to The Star, claimed that the foreign women were being confined and abused for sex services.

The messages were accompanied by appeals for help. Some of the messages read:

> Pls sir help us.

> Not fine, sir.

> We cannot stand here sir.

> My friends very pitiful here.

> Can you come help us sir?

The Star has forwarded the text messages to senior police officers in Bukit Aman for action. Some 2,000 people are working at the 60,000ha Bakun dam, which is about the size of Singapore.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Talib Jamal confirmed that police had evidence of people bringing women to the project site for sex.

“They bring in the women to ‘service’ workers in and around the Bakun project site,” he said, adding that due to the magnitude of the project, the RM6bil Bakun hydroelectric dam had attracted many workers.

He said certain people had set up makeshift entertainment centres there for the workers’ leisure.

It is learnt that the women are moved around in four-wheel-drive vehicles and vans to the entertainment centres.

Labourers involved in timber fields and oil palm plantations within the Kapit Division are also said to be enjoying the sex services.

Gangsters and syndicates are said to be supplying the women, both local and foreign, to the workers at the project site in Belaga district.

“These people are cashing in on the situation. We believe some of these women were brought into the state illegally,” Comm Talib told The Star.

On Tuesday night, police crippled one of the suspected syndicates providing the sex services.

A pimp and 10 women from Indonesia, the Philippines and China were picked up about 189km from Bintulu town, near Bakun.

Asked how the women were brought into Sarawak, Comm Talib said there were two possibilities – via entry points and transported to Bakun to be used as sex slaves, or smuggled in over the porous 1,000km Sarawak-Kalimantan border.

Sex trade flourishing since 1996, Bakun workers involved

MIRI : The sex trade in Bakun involves an intricate network of urban gangsters, mobile vice syndicates and insiders at the mammoth hydroelectric dam in central Sarawak.

Sources told The Star that villagers living in and around the 60,000ha site in Belaga district had known about the sex trade since 1996 when the Bakun project started.

“No one dared to speak up openly because there are gangsters involved and because the sex trade involved a complicated network that originates from outside Bakun.

The source added that gangsters from urban centres, like Bintulu and Miri, would find local and foreign girls to be used as prostitutes.

“These gangsters would liaise with those who have the transport and linkages to send these girls into Bakun to serve the workers.

“Certain people, working in supervisory levels in sub-contracts and contracts in the Bakun area, would then arrange for these girls to have sex with the workers at specific places and at specific times of the month,” the source said.

The Star reported yesterday that it had received SMSes and calls for help from the women, who claimed to be living in fear as sex slaves at the site.

The report also quoted Sarawak Police Comm Datuk Talib Jamal as saying that the police had evidence of people bringing women for sex at the project site, which is about the size of Singapore.

It is learned that the state and federal police are trying their best to trace the source of the desperate appeals for help.

The Star also learned that local Bakun residents had complained before to their local political representatives about the presence of these foreign women and foreign labourers.

The issue has prompted calls from various groups for the police to urgently quash the sex trade at the dam and arrest the brains behind the syndicates.

Environmental watchdog and community rights group, Borneo Resources Institute, wants state and federal police to investigate the matter fast.

Institute coordinator for Sarawak, Raymond Abin, said his institute had received such complaints from Bakun villagers before.

“Residents itold us that these mobile brothels would come every month, just after payday,” Abin said when interviewed.

Clampdown on sex trade

The police have been clamping down on the sex trade and will go all out to wipe out such crimes, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said.

Musa said this was evident in Sarawak when police busted an international syndicate bringing in women to be used as sex slaves.

“We have also made a number of arrests connected to human trafficking and we always have close relations with our counterparts overseas on this matter,” he added.

finally got a chance to go to kuching and bintulu last week.
in kuching, i chatted with the taxi driver, a young chap. according to him, if u want massage or some fun, u may try it out at a massage parlour near chungling park. hope i got the name right. anyway, i dint try it out this time round.
the next day, caught a flight to bintulu. chatted with the taximan. but no info from him. not willing to share. or maybe he thought i m from bukit aman. went for a walk around the river area at night. went up to one inn and noticed few indonesian girls. but the condition of the rooms not so good. turn me off. it was cheap however.

1. If u stay at Hilton, u can shop around the Pubs around that hotels (In front and near to parkson) . There are FLs available but mostly depend on how charismatic you are. Other location is padungan area (Soho, Ipanema) and Travillion.

2. There are HC in Hilton itself, but i never try before because its very small and inside the gym itself. Only 3-5 rooms. And mostly MILF. Other leading hotels are the same.

3. If you need massage, i would recomend you to the "proper" (no hanky panky) massage parlour around the town. Go to Chong Lin area or RH plaza and there are several mp there. They are mostly operated by PRC.

Last nite, a fren called me up and ask me to try out a new massage parlour at Jalan Mendu. This MP is named as "Gold Sand" (My favourite singer Jin-sha). Just open for around 2 weeks. It operated on a 2-shoplot x 3 storeys.

Decoration was nice, room was big and clean, with curtain partition. However, bed was too small for my size. Facilities wise, nothing except massage.

Massage menu on offer are foot reflexology (+/- $40.00), chinese massage ($58.00), Oil massage ($68.00), Thai massage ($78.00).
