Last time I was in HCMC a few years ago, my friend took me to a restaurant which he tells me specializes in/renown for serving RIVER fish etc.

Some of the fishes were a bit too bony for my taste but the other foods - sourced I guess also from rivers, were very nice. This still a good place to go to? Too bad I no longer have the name/address etc.

im assuimg you are based in HK, so i will post this , last time i was in hk, a friend of mine, took me to a places specialising in seafood searving fish from teh SEA...etc etc..is this still a good place to go?...hwo easy is it asnwer that question
now given that hcmc has 15 or so districts a population of 9-10mill, with restaurantcs catering to you millionaires and places catering to common folk ect etc there are probably at least 20 places that is famous for seafood...teh specialisation mught be a certain type of fish, or it could be that its is wild river fish etc ewtc...just as my hypothical question in HK, you question is far far to broad and open..was its a style of cooking teh fish like lau ca keo, or was it specilaise in fish farmed in sapa, or was it another type like salmon etc etc

Well given that the 20 girls who we got a line up from don't speak Chinese or English and (not that this is very believable) tell me they dislike singies as there are a few groups that frequent this place...they are a terrible choice to bring to singapore...plus from what i have seen of u guys u are creatures of routine go same places unless someone else intro...unlikely u go anywhere else than the places at far end of tbt

Hmmmm.... perhaps I didn't ask the correct question - or that I really don't know about the wide variety of restaurants and different kinds of cooking in HCMC.

Even in Hong Kong, I'm pretty sure that there is NO restaurants that specializes in serving RIVER/FRESH WATER fish. Seafood restaurants - dime a dozen, but none that I know of which specializes in river fish.

You mean there are THAT many restaurants in HCMC specializing in serving these fresh water fish? I remember that the Cat fish was the Featured dish at that restaurant.

Anyway, I guess this is not an important matter.

Thanks

basa or catfish is like poor mans fish, u can get that served EVERYWHERE, there is also snakehead fish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakehead_%28fish%29 tahst also another poor mans fish, the rich mans river fish is ca hoi = salmon and tis is farmed in the mountainous areas around sapa, sapa also has ca suoi, which i dont know what it is in english, then the most common delicacy is ca keo which is a species of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goby...now this is just touching the tip of the iceberg

Oh Wow! Thanks!

So I guess the place my friend took me was really nothing special! I was pretty convinced it was a special meal/place as the restaurant was packed and he had made it to sound to be so! Disappointed now, to say the least!

Oh well, at least when I get down there, then I can easily avail myself of this errrr......"delicacy!" Sheesh!

how much is considered overprice?

eating shell fish etc seafood at restaurant in district 1 is definitely overprice due to their high operational cost.but thats not the place for such seafood in the first place.

try having such seafood at the shops along river bank,gd cheap shell fish and cheap beer..

errrr Uncle oi...those bia om that have their sound system set up permanantly does not mean that they have a ktv licence.

Vietnam stop granting ktv and club licence since ard year 2007 (shld be ard that period, cant remember clearly.) during those days where the authorities still grant licence, only some bigger scale family ktv get the licence..bia om still operate under a restaurant licence bcos the security department will not issue licence to them.mainly reason is for their future "coffee money"

although Vietnam now start granting ktv licence again but Hcmc is not allowed due to over in numbers of entertainment outlets.
