Singapore style of learning is baroque style. You cram info into your brain and then you vomit it out during the exams. I hate this sort of routine. It does little to help one deal with politics at work place or to help one get rich. I don't agree too with having scholars in a investment unit. If you had read my earlier posts you would have seen what I wrote about Suchow. Business should be left to predators not professors. However you are stereotyping professors by saying they cannot survive in a jungle. I happen to know one who is not only a partner in a profitable scientific venture but did groundbreaking research. There are people like these around, but as I said rare. Businessmen are different from intellectuals. Intellectuals can be contented when they achieve a breakthrough in their research or come up with a ground breaking theory. Businessmen on the other hand just want to profit as much as possible with the breakthough.Contributions to society are in different ways. If you think money is your judgement of success then its your call. People wont remember you for posterity but people remember Alfian Saat/Catherine Lim because of their poetry and writings.

I think bro EtherC's main grouse is with the use of the word "intellectual". I can see that he is probably an intellectual himself, or at the very least, a well-read person. I think half the people in this forum probably have no idea about half the things he posted, nor the authors and thinkers he mentioned.

Now if we take the word "intellectual" out of this entire discussion, and instead replace it with the word "mind games" at the appropriate portions of the previous posts, mutatis mutandis, I wonder whether bro EtherC would still be as peeved.
