Hanoi Flower Festival blooms for the New Year
================================================== ==== VietNamNet Bridge - The second annual Hanoi Flower Festival kicked off on December 30 at Ly Thai To Square, as part of activities gearing up for the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi. Participants in the opening ceremonies included Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, and Hanoi officials. At the start of the event, a 4.5-meter-high Khue Van Cac pavilion was unveiled, created using 1,000 yellow daisies. Another 1,000 flowers were used to form a 10m-long train on a traditional dress fashioned by artisans from Hanoi. The number 1,000 was also created using thousands of blossoms floating on the surface of Hoan Kiem Lake. Images of Long Bien Bridge, Khue Van Cac Pavilion, rice and flower villages, the four seasons, and a scene depicting the city’s trams from the last century are on display. Another highlight is a 6 meter-high tower of blossoms surrounded by nine dragons woven from fresh flowers and fruits. They commemorate the Ly Dynasty during its 215-year reign (1010-1225), located near the Ly Thai To statue. Hundreds of different varieties of flowers from across Vietnam are showcased, including blossoms which are representative of Hanoi such as daisies and gladioli. In addition, more than 30,000 tulips have been brought in from the Netherlands. During the festival, a flower-arranging contest, an ao dai (Vietnam’s traditional long dress) fashion show and a concert will take place to welcome 2010.

Re: Hanoi
Flower power pulls crowds
11:02' 31/12/2009 ====================================== VietNamNet Bridge – Thousands of Hanoians and foreign tourists flocked to Hoan Kiem to contemplate the hundreds of thousands of flowers displayed at the capital's second flower festival, which kicked off last night. The Literature Temple, a symbol of Ha Noi, has been replicated at the flower festival, which highlights the floral interests of Hanoians. Not only an event to welcome the forthcoming New Year, the festival is also one of 80 events in the city organised by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Department to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Ha Noi next year. Speaking at the opening ceremony last night, Deputy Chairwoman of Ha Noi People's Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang said that the event also aimed to highlight the refined flower hobby of Hanoians and promote Ha Noi's culture. "The festival will be a memorable event for local residents and foreign tourists," she said. Three new Viet Nam Guinness Records, which are on display at the festival, were recognised at the ceremony. The records were granted for the longest train on an ao dai (traditional dress), the biggest rattan vase of lotus flowers and the biggest shell-inlaid wooden block presenting a royal proclamation by King Ly Thai To. While flower designer Nguyen Manh Hung used up to 1,000 flowers to form the 10m-long train on the traditional dress, artisan Nguyen Phuong Quang from Ha Noi's Chuong My District spent more than two years on the 6.5m-high rattan vase. The 1.9m-high and 1.3m-wide royal proclamation was completed by veteran artisan Tran Ba Nam from Ha Noi's Phu Xuyen Village, who spent three years on the work. The royal proclamation made by King Ly in 1010 states that the county's capital will be relocated from Hoa Lu (in Ninh Binh Province) to Thang Long (the former name of Ha Noi). During the five-day event, visitors will also have a chance to see some of Ha Noi's typical images, including the Temple of Literature and Long Bien Bridge. Replicas of these works have been created from flowers and are on display at the festival. A 60-year-old woman, Nguyen Thanh Ha, from Long Bien District, said she was quite excited to see the works created from flowers. "I've never witnessed so many flowers gathered at the same place. The artisans have created some very unique floral artworks and many other crafts," she said. At the festival, visitors can see a 6m-high tower with nine dragons curving around and up, created from flowers and fruits, which represents 215 years of power of the Ly dynasty. A tulip carpet, created from 22,000 tulips donated by the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Gerda Verburg, has attracted many visitors. One youngster, Tran Thu Trang, posed for photos with bright-coloured tulips in the background, saying she was quite curious to see if the Dutch tulips were any different than the ones planted in Viet Nam. "I couldn't tell the difference," she said. A Canadian tourist, Robert Regimbal, appreciated the hard work of Vietnamese artisans to create the unique floral arrangements at the festival. "We have flower shows back home, but only in the summer, so it's great to see all this colour and life here today. Months of hard work must have gone into this and it will only be here for five days - it's so impressive because I thought it would stay on display for at least a month. Either way, it makes the walk back to my hotel very pleasant," he said. Many volunteers from the city's colleges and universities also offer assistance to visitors and keep their eyes on the floral works, protecting them from curious folks who try to cross over the barriers to get close to the flowers to take pictures. An uncountable number of flowers of 140 varieties, together with 30 varieties of plants, are being used in this year's festival. "I expect the festival will turn into an annual event with more varieties of flowers," an anonymous visitor said. A flower show, entitled One Thousand Years of Thang Long - One Thousand Flowers Bloom will be held today, December 31, at the festival. The contest will gather competitors from 29 districts in the city, and all of the award-winning flower creations will be presented. VietNamNet/Viet Nam News
