Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

Sir Alex maybe the one that can re-surrect Owen's career, get him to start scoring and get into the ranking for England again.
It is a gamble that neither party will lose out as Owen's salary is based on his performance.

What is the different between going to Liverpool and Man City ?
While Sir Alex probably knows that Man City will be a lesser threat than Liverpool, that is why even if Tevez goes to City,he may not necessary able to play likes when he is at MU.

my 2 cents of opinion.

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

New Red Devil > Gabriel Obertan......

Video Evidence: Gabriel Obertan

Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has revealed that winger Gabriel Obertan is on the verge of signing for Manchester United.

The highly rated 20-year-old became a regular for Les Girondins at the age of just 17 but last season found chances hard to come by under former Red Devils defender Laurent Blanc.

The French Under-21 international was loaned out to fellow Ligue 1 side Lorient for the second half of last season where he featured 15 times scoring just the one goal.

Arsenal, Inter and AC Milan are said to have been interested in the youngster but it appears United have won the race for his signature for an undisclosed fee.

"There is a very strong likelihood that the deal will go ahead," confirmed Triaud to L'Equipe.

"Manchester United want to sign him and, for our part, we would be delighted to see Gabriel playing for such a prestigious club.

"We will make the official announcement when the time is right,"

United land 8Million Pound Gab

ALEX FERGUSON has bagged Bordeaux midfielder Gabriel Obertan.
The 20-year-old, regarded as one of France's hottest prospects, passed a medical at Manchester United yesterday.

And he will tie up an £8million transfer when he pens a four-year contract today.

Obertan, who can play in a central midfield role or up front, had hoped to return home to Bordeaux after his physical check-up.

But United chiefs told him he must start training with his new team-mates this morning.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Inter Milan had been watching the youngster.

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

Obertan deal looks real + The Sun reckons Huntelaar’s next

The entire press corps seem to have latched onto the Obertan story, as expected. The president was quoted as saying he’d be delighted to let him go, and The Sun thinks it is an £8m deal. Going by some accounts, United’s interest in Obertan has surprised circles in France, as he spent half of last season playing for Lorient — a middling Ligue 1 club.

The focus, according to the Sun — who are always ahead of the game [they are capable of reporting news even before an event] — now shifts to Klaas Jan Huntelaar of Real Madrid. We’ve been linked with the Dutchman countless times in the past and we’ve already seen several reports linking us to him this summer. Unsubstantiated rumours — that Milan’s offer was perhaps too low for Madrid — compete with other unsubstantiated rumours — that Meeeeeelan offered to take him on loan.

The Sun maybe a paragon of virtue, but I will believe it when I see it.

If we were to assume, for the purposes of trying to make a point, we sign Huntelaar, then it should ideally leave Ferguson with the central midfield slot to fill with a dynamic defensive midfielder; someone who can dominate and free up Carrick. The breed of the dynamic defensive midfielder is rare though, and quite expensive too. Yaya Toure is a possibility if Mascherano goes to Barcelona, although Toure would be out in January for the African Cup of Nations. Arsenal target and Fiorentina hard-man Felipe Melo, has been bigged up after an impressive showing at the Confederations Cup. He has earned a reputation of collecting a lot of cards. Truthfully, I’d gladly take such a player in the Premiership. He’ll surely concede far fewer fouls here, over the flop-and-dive-heavy Serie A.

We still have €80M left in the kitty yet David Gill is either too slow or penny pinching to use and sign star players that we desperately need.

I share your thoughts and agony. €16M for Valencia is a rip off. Dont think he is even anywhere close to Park Ji Sung or Zoran Tosic. He might be a flop. United should start signing stars that are proven and not just based on hear say. We should get Robben since he is unsettled at Madrid. At least, he can replace like 80% of what Ronaldo produces day in day out, fantastic dribbler of the ball and simply fast!

The lack of big signings might be due to the over-inflation of the transfer market, due to Real Madrid's crazy spending, perhaps, SAF will enter the market in January, for some mid season boost? .

Still, am hoping that some big gun/s (hopefully a playmaker like Sneijder / Van der Vaart ) will arrive.. That should mend the heartbreak

And now Zlatan Ibrahimovic is declared 'off the market' after being briefly linked with MU.

No big loss anyway - dun think he's worth the 60million quid they're asking.

And bro, dun fret too much lah - remember 3 years ago our ONLY signing was Michael Carrick? While Chelsea signed Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko? We went on to end a 3-year title drought and end Chelsea's 2-year streak.

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

Transfers - Your view: Should United sign Eto'o?

Manchester United have been linked with a £25 million move for Samuel Eto'o - do you think this is a good idea?

Eto'o's refusal to commit to Manchester City led United's rivals to withdraw their interest.

His agent has made it plain that it is not about the money and he will only leave Barcelona for a club who are challenging for titles, and United - who have the money, the history and the track record - are probably the only team aside from Barca who fit the bill.

Eto'o is guaranteed to give you goals, usually over 30 a season. But he also brings a loud mouth and a potentially disruptive influence to the dressing room.

The Cameroon striker is not renowned for his team ethic, either, and a perceived laziness or selfishness does not go down well with United fans - just ask Dimitar Berbatov.

There is also the question of Michael Owen, who may barely feature due to injuries but - if they keep him fit - could be a goal machine for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

FERGIE CALLS HALT TO UNITED BUSINESS

Sir Alex Ferguson handed Michael Owen the prized Manchester United number seven shirt and then declared Old Trafford closed for transfer business.

It was anticipated Ferguson would make further signings in addition to Owen, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, who joined last week from Bordeaux.

But, faced with a market over-inflated by Real Madrid and Manchester City, Ferguson has decided his current squad is good enough to challenge for an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title, even though Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez have left.

He said: "It is the end of our business, so all these stories about who were are supposed to be getting - forget it."

It means Owen will take over Ronaldo's shirt and his place in an attacking line-up containing Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, plus youngsters Daniel Welbeck and Federico Macheda, who will both be given a chance to prove they are worthy of the accolades that have been bestowed on them.

"They are both young players - but young players with ability always get a chance here."

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

I`M FIT FOR UNITED - OWEN

Michael Owen is desperate to shrug off the injury-prone tag that Manchester United's new recruit feels he has unfairly been given.

Owen will get the chance to spearhead United's attack this season following Sir Alex Ferguson's surprise statement that he will not be doing any more transfer business this summer.

He will do so wearing the number seven shirt vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo and accompanied by a great deal of scepticism about his general fitness, a situation Fabio Capello has reflected on more than one occasion has kept Owen out of England contention.

Yet the former Liverpool star does not feel the facts bear out such opinions.

Although he accepts a broken metatarsal and subsequent cruciate knee ligament injury, caused as a direct result of rushing back to action too quickly in order to appear at the 2006 World Cup, wrecked his first two years at Newcastle, with 33 and 32 appearances to his name in the second half of a four-year deal, Owen believes there is little wrong with his body.

"It does irritate me that so many people have doubts," he said.

"But if there is one thing I am angered by, the injury thing would be it.

"There is no doubt I have had injuries in my career. But there is a long list of players that have had a broken metatarsal.

"I was foolish trying to rush back for the World Cup and my leg had just come out of plaster.

"But I played 33 and 32 games in the last two years in a team that was not in Europe and did not go on a decent cup run. Still I was continually labelled injury-prone, which gets up my nose.

"I am 29 and have played over 500 games for club and country. That says it all."

What Owen does accept the need to prove is the retention of ability that has made him only the fourth striker in England history to score 40 goals for his country.

"In certain parts, people do have a justification to have a go at me," he said.

"I didn't set the world alight in the last year at Newcastle. That is no-one's fault but mine. We were not playing well as a team and I wasn't doing my bit either."

His observation clearly didn't put Ferguson off signing a player he spent so many years trying to stop, but the United manager does not feel Owen was helped by the handling he received during the early years.

Ferguson has still not forgotten sending Ronnie Wallwork and John Curtis away to Malaysia in 1997 as part of an England Youth team Owen was also part of and noting that while his players returned to a six-week break, their young team-mate was unleashed on the Premier League by Liverpool and followed up with his momentous appearance the World Cup in France, when his career was really ignited.

"I remember it well," said Ferguson.

"I remember saying at the time it was unfair to have that strain and intensity of matches at big tournaments, one summer after another, with no summer break."

Ferguson freely admits that while he monitored Owen during the final year of his contract at Newcastle, knowing the Chester-born star could leave St James' Park for nothing at the season's end, he probably would not have swooped had Karim Benzema not been caught up in the whirlwind that has become Real Madrid's summer spending spree.

However, once Benzema opted to link up with Ronaldo and Kaka, Ferguson went for Owen.

And, while plenty of supporters have their doubts, he is convinced the move will be a fruitful one for all parties.

"Michael gives us experience in the penalty box, which is vital," said Ferguson.

"He has always had that little knack of losing defenders in the last third.

"I know he will score a lot of goals for us. He has been great at that for years."

Fellow new signing Antonio Valencia, meanwhile, is adamant he was not signed to replace Ronaldo.

"I have mentioned this a few times in the past when I first spoke to Manchester United it was never said that I was coming to replace Cristiano Ronaldo," he said.

"Obviously he did very well here because he is a great player but I am here to do the things that I do well.

"I have got a real desire to succeed and I will never compare myself to him."

Re: Manchester United's Headliners, Articles and Rumours

Ferguson vows to spend wisely

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he will not be "stupid" with the £80million windfall he received for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some Manchester United fans are bound to be alarmed and disappointed in equal measure that Ferguson has declared his summer transfer business over, even though he has only signed three players, the most notable being Michael Owen, who has arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer.

"I can only placate the fans this way and say I am not going to be stupid," he said.

The Glazer family have already insisted Ferguson will get whatever cash he feels is required to strengthen a squad that next season will bid for an unprecedented fourth straight league title, as well as a place in the Champions League final for the third year in a row.

Ferguson did little to counter that stance, hinting that the decision not to invest the type of huge sums that have been spent by Real Madrid come from his own desire not to waste money in a massively inflated transfer market.

He added: "We have got that wonderful sum of money from Real Madrid but there was no way we were going to throw it away and put an extra nought on the end of the transfer which I didn't think was value."

The case of Karim Benzema was a case in point. With Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez both heading for the exit door, Benzema was top of Ferguson's wish-list. At 21, and with Champions League experience already under his belt at Lyon, Benzema would have fitted perfectly into Ferguson's grand plan.

The initial overtures from Old Trafford received a positive response. Then Real Madrid made their move, taking the fee way beyond £30million, to a sum Ferguson felt was unreasonable.

"People have to try and put their own value on players," said Ferguson.

"Lyon may think we under-valued him and that is fine but they have done well to get 32million euros."
