That speaks a lot on how important it is to first learn Vietnamese and the culture at the same time to get a foot up into understanding the Vietnamese. Priceless tip. (And also, if they talk behind your back, you will not be so blur like a sotong). Alright Bro!

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner

My brother has a Thai wife.

When they have a son, I help apply citizenship for her with a condition that she cannot bring son to Thailand. Only her parent can come Singapore to see the grandson.

Now my nephew is 13 and I allowed him to go. He hate my Thai sister in law place. Full of mosquitoes and no aircon.

I worry when my nephew is young, and my sister in law will run away with the young son.

Maybe my worry is over reaction on my part.

My nephew does not go along (maybe he has his reasons?)

I guess even as life is running along fine, one has to be 'one step ahead' when dealing with a Viet life partner. After reading some of the postings here, my conclusion is to keep a level head where finance are concerned. Giving more doesn't equate to getting back more love and care.

My visits to Vietnam (HCMC, Hanoi) has been strictly as a tourist to enjoy the food, sights and sounds of this lovely country. Yes, I can see from your Avatar that you are one who does good work. All the best!

Agree bro, especially if one has a family there, after slogging half dead in Sillypore , we need to refresh ourselves and look forward to enjoying life in Vietnam while our other half will keep motivate us daily to earn more and bring back $$$, that is the wonder of Viet Nam.

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner

You re an Xpert in vietnam girls and culture. Lately I been talking to 1 viet girl study in Singapore, she came from not rich but quite well-to-do background. Then she told me her past, she been rape by her guy cousin when she is 13 yr and her cousin 21 yr.

Her cousin work as cong an and threatened to do harm to her family if she tell her parents. She told me it is common in vietnam, many of her girlfriends experience rape from their older cousin.

Is Vietnam culture so de-moralised that man behave like beast?

Is Vietnam culture so de-moralised that man behave like beast?
In VN, cong an is a powerful figure that does more harm than good to the common folks. Vn society is quite dependent on how rich and powerful one's family is. When i first went VN in 2002, i was quite shocked to see how the common folks were quite threatened by the cong an. Even as i started my business, the ward cong an will come every month to collect `coffee money'. The best of all was that these cong an are the lower ranking ones. That's the reason why most viets hate the cong an.

Talking about divided by wealth, let me cite an example that just happened to me last night. My business partner in VN requested that i picked up her friend and her husband from Changi Airport last evening and that she has passed her friend some payment for me. My wife and i picked up this couple whom i always see on my business partner's facebook. 1 look and i know they are rich. Dress with class and everything branded. I remember seeing many times my business partner going with her to very high class places in Saigon for dinner. Even handphone is Vertu They met me and saw that i was in Bermudas and i could see that they are not much interested to talk to me. The look on their face was terrible. My business partner told me that gal graduated from UK. I spoke to her in English, she replied only a few sentences. When they reach my car, they were shocked and attitude changed totally. She asked me `how much does a new Mercedes Benz E250 cost in Singapore?' Throughout the next 20 minutes as i drove them to their hotel in Orchard Road, attitude was very good and they started to chat with my wife and i. What a total change in attitude. My 10 over years of doing business with Vietnamese, this is very common and i always see and experience it. Wealth will determine how you are treated by others in society. You can imagine how i was treated for the years that i was poor and need to earn the money from these middle and higher income vietnamese. Sad but true.

Sad and still very shallow mentality with regards to wealth. Lucky you didn't joked with her that the MB E250 belonged to a friend, I bet for the next 20 mins she would not be talking to you.

I suppose money talks loudest in Vietnam, and the rich will always be showered with power and status everywhere they go. I just recalled from memory while in Vietnam, I was told that to get better treatment and service, one has to bribe the teachers and hospital staff with money and gifts. The practice is widely acceptable I guess, and to change such a mentality will likely take another generation.

Bros here, how about some really positive behaviour of the Viets in general? Can they give something good without expecting anything in return? I am pretty sure there is another side of the coin.

To be true, my 12 years in VN, i hardly meet any good and positive behaviour of Viets. But there's a few viets that i met and left me with good impression:
1. Landlord of my office. He is formerly Civil servant and his 4 children are all degree holders and also civil servants. The family have dinner every evening together. The father is one gentleman, not smoking and not drinking. His children are also all like him. Not to mention, he was the only landlord that returned me my rental deposit after finishing the contract.

2. The neurosurgeon that operated on me at FV Hospital. There were only 3 neurosurgeon in the whole vietnam during that time . Doctors can choose their patients in VN. This neurosurgeon was based in hanoi . he's nearly 70 years old. When the doctors at FV hospital called him and ask if he wants to attend to my case, he agreed and flew down to saigon. My wife wanted to give him some coffee money (which is common in VN), he refused. He told my wife to just go pay for the surgery fee at the cashier. He could have asked for a big sum seeing that i am a foreigner .

other than these two outstanding viets, i seriously have not met any other that demands respect from me. From rich to poor, mentality are quite the same.
