Businessman jailed, caned for molesting nurse hired to care for cancer-stricken wife

SINGAPORE: An Indian national convicted of sexually assaulting a private nurse hired to care for his cancer-stricken wife was sentenced to seven months’ jail and three strokes of the cane on Friday (Oct 13).

Pillai Shyam Kumar Sadashivan, a 47-year-old managing director of a steel trading company in Dubai, brought his wife to Singapore in August last year for treatment.

She suffers a rare form of leukemia and her chance of survival is just three per cent, according to a medical report.

The victim, now 25, was hired in December 2016 to care for Pillai’s wife at the couple’s rented apartment at Normanton Park.

On Dec 14, the nurse arrived at the apartment to find her patient asleep in the bedroom. Pillai invited her to have a seat in the living room, where he chatted with her and “steered the conversation towards sexual matters,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Gail Wong said.

Pillai asked the young woman if she provided “extra service” like “girls in Dubai”. He also asked her to pull up her blouse to show him her chest, promising he would not touch her because he “just wanted to see", said the prosecutor.

After the nurse refused, Pillai grabbed her by the collar with such force that a button popped out and grabbed her breast. The woman struggled to get away from Pillai, who also stroked her between the legs, saying her thighs were “sexy and smooth”, the court heard.

After the assault, Pillai ordered the nurse to attend to his wife, making lewd remarks as she walked towards the bedroom.

The traumatised young woman later told her employer, MedXcess, about the assault and sought counselling. In a report, the counsellor said the nurse “could not bring herself to go back to work … yet needed to work to support herself and her daughter”.

Pillai pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual assault and insulting the modesty of a woman in August.

His lawyer, Mr Mathew Kurian, called for leniency in court on Friday, saying Pillai “deeply regrets” his actions and had “paid a heavy price” for his “lapse in judgement”.

His assets had been frozen and his business suffered because his Dubai visa has expired, Mr Kurian said, adding that Pillai’s two daughters, aged 10 and 12, had also missed a year of school.

Seven Myanmar nationals were sentenced to 12 months’ jail for rioting after they got into a fight with three fellow countrymen over cigarettes at Peninsula Plaza.

The court heard on Friday (13 October) that on 4 June this year, Cung San Eng, 26, Tluang Uk, 39, Ronal, 30, Lal Tha Siama, 25, Thaung Sun, 29, Van Liaw Aung, 30, Aung Maw, 23, and another unknown male had been consuming alcohol since 3pm near Peninsula Plaza. The seven accused, who pleaded guilty to one charge of rioting, are work permit holders working in marine dredging, shipyards and construction.

At about 10:35pm, a dispute broke out between the group of eight and a group of three other Myanmar nationals over cigarettes and a fight ensued.

One of the victims, Wunna, 32, fell as a result of the scuffle. Several of the accused rained punches on Wunna as he lay on the ground. Wunna’s friends Pyae Phyo Zaw, 31, and Min Zaw, 40, attempted to stop the fight but were also assaulted by the group.

The entire incident lasted for about one and a half minutes. Police arrived at 10:45pm and arrested Cung San Eng, Tluang Uk and Ronal. The rest were arrested after follow-up investigations.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Claire Poh asked for a sentence of at least nine months for each of the accused, whom she said were part of an unlawful assembly. DPP Poh pointed out that the injuries to Wunna were not minor and that he had suffered a partially dislocated right foot and was given a week’s medical leave.

In mitigation, the seven Myanmar nationals, who were unrepresented, said through an interpreter that they hoped for leniency. They told the court they were supporting their families in Myanmar and did not have income for four months since they were remanded.


Referring to the December 2013 Little India riot, District Judge Imran Abdul Hamid said that Singapore takes a “very serious view of rioting offences”. As such, he said that the sentencing needed to be a deterrent so that Peninsula Plaza, commonly known as “Little Myanmar”, does not go the way of Little India.

DJ Imran backdated each person’s sentences to the date when they were first remanded in June.

Addressing the group, DJ Imran said, “My advice to you when you go back to Myanmar, tell your friends and family desiring to come to Singapore: Don’t mess around with our laws.”

The group could have faced a maximum jail term of seven years and been liable to caning.

For just $10 a day, he agreed to be a runner for a pimp and collect earning from prostitutes operating out of HDB flats. The last time he did so, he was caught in a police raid.

Yuan Zhengwang, a 26-year-old Chinese national, was jailed three weeks after pleading guilty in the State Courts to one charge of abetting another to live in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person on Friday (13 October). He was also fined $3,000 for obstruction of justice.

The court heard that Yuan, a container surveyor, contacted someone named ‘Zi Xin’ through WeChat sometime in June 2017 after learning that he could earn extra income by working for him. ‘Zi Xin’ agreed to pay Yuan $10 a day for running errands.

Yuan was handed an iPhone by another man the next day. ‘Zi Xin’ then contacted Yuan through that phone, and instructed him to deliver condoms and lubricants to females in Singapore, or collect rent from them. Despite realising then that the women were working as prostitutes, Yuan did not stop working for ‘Zi Xin’.

Around the same time, Chen Yina, a 33-year-old Chinese national, arrived in Singapore and was told by a friend that she could earn quick money by working as a freelance prostitute in Singapore.

An unknown male arranged for Chen to live at a rented HDB flat in Jurong West Street 64 for $100 a day. After Chen moved into the unit, the man also helped advertise her sexual services online. The man also told her to contact a number belonging to Yuan once she was ready to pay the rent.

On 28 June, Chen asked Yuan to change a light bulb in her room and also told him to collect her rental payment. The next day, Yuan went to the flat and changed the light bulb and then collected the $500 rent, even though he was aware that the money were earnings from Chen’s prostitution.

Before Yuan could leave the flat, however, police raided the flat. Panicking, Yuan threw an iPhone, which was given to him by ‘Zi Xin’, out of the window in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Zhi Xiang said that the phone was eventually retrieved by police officers. Police also seized $100 from Yuan, believed to be his salary given to him by ‘Zi Xin’, as well as the $500 that he collected from Chen. Yuan, who has been in remand since July, will have his sentence backdated.
