The 10 Coolest Things at #CES2016

Published on January 08, 2016
by Eric Cohen

As this year’s CES draws to a close, we thought it might be fun to list ten of the coolest things presented at this year’s tradeshow. Topics range from the drinkable to the downright fashionable.

1. LG Rollable OLED

The above title pretty much says it all. LG had a rollable OLED on display for the enjoyment of all CES attendees. Reports indicate it is almost paper-thin but it’s not full HD (not clear if that means it’s minimally 1440 pixels wide). However, this is chalking up to be the coolest placemat you will ever own.

2. Samsung’s 170-inch SUHD TV

Comprised of multiple modular panels that can split apart then reconnect into one, ginormously large monitor, Samsung’s SUHD TV was widely accepted as an impressive piece of technology. According to many, it was hard to distinguish where one panel ended and the other began. It was also presented as an example of Samsung’s bezel-free technology, where the use of frames and stands go by way of the magic lantern.

3. The Nikon D5 and KeyMission 360

We’ve brought this up a couple of times in other articles this week, but Nikon was the camera manufacturer to beat at this year’s CES. What with the 3 million ISO D5 and their first action cam, the KeyMission360 (yep. It records footage from a 360-degree perspective. Take that, GoPro), Nikon is poised to have some much buzzed about gear in 2016.

4. Intel’s Adrenaline Dress

Designed by Chromat, this futuristic looking garment senses your adrenaline surges. That’s right: when you feel bad, it feels bad. When you’re happy, the dress is happy. So how good you look in it depends on your mood swings, apparently. Powered by Intel’s Curie wearable module, it can also record various data points including heart rate, running speed, airtime and maximum height for all you acrobats and BMX bandits out there. But you wouldn’t want to ride your BMX in that dress. Unless you’re planning on attending the Mermaid Day parade in Coney Island.

5. Ehang 184 Drone

Drones here, drones there... There’s drones everywhere. Or at least that’s the impression one would get while rooming the floor at CES. But hang on a second, here’s the Ehang 184 drone! What’s that, you ask? Why it’s the first rideable drone. It’s powered by electricity and controlled via an app uploaded to your smart phone. The Chinese company has developed a quadcopter weighing in at 441 pounds and can supposedly carry a person at up to 230 pounds for 20 minutes. That’s approximately 10 miles of travel distance. So all you superspies out there looking to get an aerial view of your enemy’s volcanic lair, this may not be the ride for you.

6. The Somabar Robot Bartender

Repeat after me: the world’s first app controlled robotic bartending appliance. Not only will this negate the need for any future “guy walks into a bar” jokes, this handy device is programmed with 300 recipes and cleans itself between drinks. Funded by a Kickstarter campaign, the Somabar turned a few heads while getting others slightly buzzed.

7. The Livestream Movi

Looking like a small can of evaporated milk with a lens attached, the Livestream Movi can capture 4K video while streaming footage to your phone or tablet. The accompanying app also acts as an editing suite – it’s everything a budding broadcaster needs.

8. Technics SL-1200

We’ve mentioned this once before, we thought it bears mentioning again. Panasonic’s unveiling of this powerhouse turntable got audiophiles and professional DJ’s excited everywhere. Previous models of the SL-1200 continued to be used in nightclubs even after the company’s discontinuation of the record player back in 2010.

9. Faraday Future

Fara—what?! This mysterious company finally revealed its mammoth secret at CES: the “high performance electric dream car” FFZERO1. At the moment it is still in its prototype phase but what have we seen thus far? Man…. 1000 horsepower that can exceed up to 200mph and will move from zero to 60mph in less than three seconds. Now just imagine yourself driving that beast around Gotham City while repeating over and over “with great power comes great responsibility.” Wait, wrong superhero.

10. Kodak Super 8 Camera

Not to be undone, Kodak is bringing film back and providing the cameras to match. Their new line of Super 8 cameras have a combined look of the modern with a touch of the retro. Along with this rollout, Kodak plans to set up film developing services and a package of post-production tools. And before you say “what’s an analog camera? Where in Sam Hell can I get some analog film?!” Don’t worry, Adorama’s already got you covered.
