PAP team eager to make amends and prove their mettle to Aljunied residents, he says

SINGAPORE — A day after Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong went on a walkabout in Aljunied GRC, he made an apology to residents in Aljunied for letting them down in 2011.
In a Facebook post this morning (Aug 17), Mr Goh wrote: “I am sorry that PAP let Aljunied down in 2011.”

Mr Goh had gone on a walkabout in the Serangoon and Hougang divisions yesterday to lend moral support to the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) likely slate of candidates for Aljunied GRC and to “validate the residents’ support”.
“The lessons learnt include ‘listen more and do more to serve the people’s interest, and not just to win their votes’,” he added.

Perhaps a subtle jibe at Workers’ Party chairman Sylvia Lim’s first Instagram post of herself having oyster omelette at Fengshan hawker centre, Mr Goh said: “I did not have time for orh luak and other local delicacies, but I was touched by many residents’ warm response and openness to engage.”

He noted however, that a few residents had appeared “tentative”, to which he felt it was “fully understandable”.

“The PAP team is eager to make amends and show they can do a better job. They are determined to prove their mettle to the residents.”

Mr Goh, who last week confirmed that he will be contesting with the PAP Marine Parade GRC team in the upcoming General Election, also offered to extend help to Aljunied’s PAP team.

“Marine Parade will be happy to share with the Aljunied PAP team its various programmes on helping vulnerable residents like WeCare and EduGrow,” he said.

At his walkabout yesterday, he had said the PAP “remains very interested” in Aljunied GRC and hopes to be given a chance to serve residents there again.

The Workers’ Party announced on Sunday that all of its Aljunied GRC members of parliament – Mr Low Thia Khiang, Ms Sylvia Lim, Mr Chen Show Mao, Mr Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap and Mr Pritam Singh – will be defending their seats in the coming elections.
