Government survey: Most singaporeans are positive about retirement and ageing

According to a recent Instituted of Policy Studies (IPS) Survey, on retirement and growing old, 80% of Singaporeans are confident that their needs will be taken care of in retirement.
The survey also found that most Singaporeans have a positive outlook about ageing.
IPS explained that this positive outlook was “quite remarkable” because generally, society favours the young.
The study was commissioned by the government funded Council for Third Age (C3A) and it took responses from over 2000 respondents aged 50 to 74 and living in three room flats or larger.
About 52% of respondents said that their financial adequacy for the future was good or excellent while the rest said it was poor or average.
70% of them said that they look forward to each new day and 60% said that they look back on their lives so far with happiness.






While it is good that so many seniors have positive attitudes about ageing and retirement, the survey results sound much better than the reality.
Mainstream Media has been publishing the “great” results and highlighting how retirement prospects in Singapore are good, however they neglected to properly explain that the survey only took responses from better-off individuals.
When the survey did not consider those in 2 room flats or smaller it is unsurprising that most of the respondents feel positive about retirement.
What would the survey look like if it took responses from residents from poorer backgrounds too?
