SPH CHANGES TITLES OF DEFAMATORY ARTICLES BEFORE TAKING THEM DOWN COMPLETELY

Post date:
27 Nov 2013 - 7:06pm

Nicole Seah was recently attacked by the mainstream media with a defamatory and outrageous article published by SPH’s AsiaOne and Wanbao.

They had posted an article calculated to destroy the reputation of NSP’s 2nd assistant secretary-general by indicating that she was dating a married man.

The AsiaOne article carried the title “Nicole Seah uploads photo of her with a man believed to be married” and depicted a photo of Nicole smiling and leaning on a man’s shoulder.

Upon seeing the article, Nicole immediately took to facebook to alert the public that the article was false.
She wrote that the reports in both the Chinese and English media outlets were “NOT true at all”. She also called it “gutter journalism at its finest.”

Her post gathered a lot of shares and AsiaOne quickly realised that it might be in trouble and secretly changed the title of their article to read “Nicole Seah says she is dating man in photo she uploaded on Facebook”.
Similarly, WanBao also changed their title:

Since then, the AsiaOne article has been removed.

To rebut the articles, Nicole Seah posted another message to her facebook page explaining that she is seeking an official apology from SPH over the article or she may look into “the very real possibility” of suing them:
My contacts in the media industry are currently looking into asking for an official apology from the Singapore Press Holdings for the irreversible damage that they have caused to me and my loved ones because of their baseless and irresponsible reporting.

Failing which, I am looking into the very real possibility of suing them for libel and slander.
Just because I'm from the opposition doesn't accord the media more liberties to mess around with my reputation. After all, they wouldn't dare do the same with anyone from the PAP. Please compare Steve Chia's and Yaw Shin Leong's case against what happened with Michael Palmer. In Palmer's case, he got away quietly and the girl involved was implicated severely.
My situation is completely innocuous and there is even no semblance of a scandal or mistake that I have to own up to. I have absolutely nothing to hide.
In the meantime, I ask of a favour from the general public, if you are free, to kindly write to the Singapore Press Holdings and demand that they refrain from practising double standards and baseless accusations in their reporting.
This is not just about me or my reputation. This is about journalistic integrity in Singapore at large and will have bearing on the way other news is being reported, and is akin to deceit to the public in their skewed reporting.

It was found by Temasek Review Facebook Page that the reporter who had originally posted the article was Meredith Woo:

In general, netizens suport Nicole Seah and have condemned SPH for posting such defamatory articles. The responses written by Nicole Seah on facebook were widely shared and had many supportive comments.
This incident just goes to confirm the fact that the mainstream media, especially SPH, acts as a propaganda tool for the government.
