Exclamation Life behind Detention Barracks (DB) [tagged]

WHEN Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel commit an offence while in service, they can be subjected to a court martial.

In such instances, the case is brought before a military court (located at Choa Chu Kang Way) instead of a civilian court. The Subordinate Military Court, which is equivalent to Singapore's subordinate criminal courts, conducts proceedings using similar legal rules and procedures.

The most common offences heard in the court are absence without official leave, drug-related offences, disobedience and misconduct. Penalties under the SAF Act include reprimands, fines, detentionand discharge from service.

A serviceman may choose to be represented by a lawyer or an SAF defending officer at the court martial.

While a defending officer is available at no charge to the serviceman, he has to bear the cost of engaging a lawyer.

Only those guilty of the most severe offences are sentenced to detention.

The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) say that at anyone time, there were about 150 detainees at the SAF Detention Barracks in Kranji. These included SAF regulars and national servicemen.

Servicemen convicted at a court martial can file appeals, but only one or two doso each year. According to the Mindef website, the Military Court of Appeal is the SAF's highest court and its decision on a case is final.

It consists of a president and four other members appointed by the Armed Forces Council. Its president must be a judge of the Supreme Court, or a person qualified to be one.

Two of the members are either lawyers in private practice or senior legal officers from the Singapore Legal Service, while the other two members are senior SAF officers

Dear brothers,

- Have you been to detention barracks during your national service?

- Are you curious about detention barrack's lifestyle?

Why not share your thoughts and experiences now together. It will be good for us to gain more knowledge about DB and to prevent the younger ones from going to DB ih the future..

Wah lao eh.
How sexual is this?
Or are we suppose to imagine being fucked in the backsides while in there?
We got Changi Prison Diaries and what now, DB Memoirs?

TS, you mean one has to know about the 'lifestyle' in DB in order to prevent themselves from committing an offence serious enough to be thrown in there?

A bit not right leh if one has to think like that.

Re: Life behind Detention Barracks (DB)

DB life is much tougher than prison life which I always heard from the inmates from CPC.

Actually there are some issues i would like to verify and hope the brothers here are able to help me out:

1. Is not attending IPPT is a offence and will be charged? If yes, roughly how long will the sentence be?

2. What is the daily program/ tasks when lockup in DB? Do they being lock-up 24 hours per day or there are other activities bside lock-up?

3. How big is the DB cellroom and can lockup max. how many people?

4. How do we address those people being lock-up in db? prisoner, inmate or wat?

5. Can I assume offences beside AWOL will have criminal records? Or any other type of conditions will leave criminal records also?

6.People locked up in DB will being called by their names or there are ID Number for them?

7. What is the most common offences for sentences to DB?

8. The MP in DB are mostly regular or NSF?

9. Family members allowed to visit those being lockup?

10. Anyone can share what's the food manu in DB?

11. Are the females being lockup in other loCations?

12. What to take note when going to db?

13. Will there be discount on their sentences/ programs if good behaviours?

Sent a reservist in there for 3 days for AWOL during ICT. He said he never ever wants to go back there again, no details given. Guess the 3 days straighten his thoughts!

3: DB is Detention Barracks which by its name itself implies there are more than one cell room :: This question cannot be answered by anyone except someone actually working there.

7. Insubordination, striking superior officer, ammunition charges, firearm charges likely get you send there. Seven years, remember what they always say Additionally: NOT CUTTING YOUR HAIR!!!!

9. Yes , but there are rules etc regarding letters, packages, which i cant remember... the paper is somewhere around here....

10. Two of my unit pals were sent in for fighting and after they came back... they said cookhouse food is heaven. That should tell you how nice the menu is

12. Time spent in DB does not contribute to your 2 years: theoretically if you get sent to DB on your 2nd last day, you will serve your whatever sentence, come back to serve your last day then get your Green book
