I have never been to hatyai or danok. It will be my first time there intending to spend about 10 days. So the advice is to stay in hatyai, travel to danok for the nightlife and return back to hatyai the next day?

Ya, something like that, or spend 1 nite or 2 @danok. then back to hatyai.
anyway travelling time to & from only about 50min or so.

hatyai has more daytime activities for you, i believed to kill time.

Think u stay at Danok because more night activities there. Daytime jus take minivan to hatyai to shop or wat? Until the 6th(estimate) day if u feel boring then stay in hatyai. Have fun!

Has anyone been to Danok during the NYE weekend? Was planning to go there with a couple of friends but was told that prices would be hiked up somewhat. Although the bigger issue would be the lack of hotel rooms and papayas available?

Price 100% definitely will be hiked on the eve.
i think rooms are more plentiful since many new hotels have been mushrooming this 2 years or so.

"papayas" also more expensive.

so get ready to pay $more , $more.

Most big hotel will up 50% for the price.. price for papayas will up as well and you got to go to farm early to get your papaya. else you will get old papaya or problem papaya.

Go Yes club for 200 coyotes + models. Go hello bangkok for slightly cheaper alcohol and not so crowded place. Go Wonderland for after renovation and models from bangkok. Also bookable sideline gals.

Basically, Danok is like a small cowboy town with couple of streets but packed with many bars/entertainment joints. No travel agent, no taxi only have motorbikes, no western pubs for early afternoon drinks. If you like 'farming', then your daytime will not be as boring as you can go 'farming'. If you don't like farming like me, the daytime is spent measuring streets and counting vehicles crossing the immigration checkpoint or going for occasional massage.
