Re: Danang & Hoi An
As a first timer, I would suggest an easier way for u. Land in DND airport, take taxi to Sinh Tourist (ST) office located along Bach Dang. Buy all your travel packages there. They have regular buses between Danang-Hoi An-Hue. U can go online to check their rates. ST is nice & cheap and caters to ang moh backpackers with English speaking staffs so u are in good hands.
There are plenty of backpacker hotels within walking distance of all the ST offices in all 3 cities so u may not even need to take a taxi (except to and fro airport). Your budget is enough to cover all 3 cities if u travel backpacker style and forget about cheonging at KTVs. Have a good trip! But u might be kicking yourself for allocating just 5D/4N for this holiday... Hoi An alone would need 2N to explore the beautiful ancient town. |

Re: Danang & Hoi An
On another note, tourists to Central Vietnam would do well to pronounce the cities properly:
Da Nang is pronounced "da nung" ("nung" rhymes with lung). Hoi An is pronounced "hoi anne" (Anne as in the lady's name). Hue is pronounced "hoo way" (not "hew" as some tourists call it). Central VN has its own distinctive dialect and even Vietnamese from Hanoi or HCMC may not understand the dialect. Hue, itself, has its own unique dialect that is different from Danang or Hoian. |

Re: Danang & Hoi An
Hmm.. u arrive late at night (8pm is considered late in small towns)... I assume u can't speak VN.... chances are they will just ask for a flat fare, may not use meter as Hoi An is considered outside city limits (ie long distance). Daytime u can still walk around and bargain prices.
I remember there is a travel agt based at the airport, perhaps u can get the agt to arrange transport for u. At least u can get a fixed fare rather than landing at airport and having to cope with chicken-and-duck talk. 250-300 is considered average...maybe slightly more at night. U have to understand the taxi will come back from Hoi An empty with no passengers. And remember to tip generously if service is good. US$2 or 3 will make their day. I hear a lot of complaints frm the locals that Sporeans are super stingy. I don't blame the tourists...because somehow after conversion to dongs, the $1 or $2 seem like a lot of money. |
