My all time favorite of the low price places for breakfast or quick meals is Boat Bakery Café, 7.30AM to+ 9.00PM, at 200/10-11 Niphat Uthit 3 Road, one block north of Sripoovanart Road and across the street from an Esso Station, phone 076 246603. Most there do not speak English but the menu is in English, it is very extensive, almost nothing is more than 25 baht per plate, fruit juices at 12 baht per glass, sandwiches15-20 baht, hamburger 25 baht. It’s a nice cheerful place and no matter what you order they seem able to get it to you in just about 3 minutes flat!!!

Wat Hat Yai Nai: Fortune Telling
At the place described in the above tip there is a Asian fortune telling device. Inserting a coin (5 or 10 Baht) causes the wheel to spin round. When it stops spinning the pointer will stop on a number. On either side of the machine are numbered shelves with fortunes inside written on pieces of paper. Take one that corresponds to your number for a highly accurate summary of the rest of your life.

The Pubb, Sugar Beat and La Vita Pub are, I believe, all owned by the same people. The Pubb has live music every night and I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the band. The musicians are young and the first time I went there I was expecting some loud, unmelodic rock stuff. I was a little taken aback, but pleased, when they started playing some laid-back jazz tracks. The cute girl vocalist with a short, bob-style haircut is very good, as are the rest of the band members.

Post Laser Disc is another Hat Yai evening entertainment venue. There are quite a few places like this in town. Post Laser Disc makes a big thing out of the fact it is featured in Lonely Planet, which it is but don't let this put you off.

Although it may appear that on Thai roads there are no rules or regulations the Thais are pretty hot on parking fines. Like everywhere else, I guess this is a good (and easy) source of income for the local authorities.

So brudders driving there, PLEASE Watch out where you leave your car if you drive to Hat Yai.

There is a place on Ngu (Snake) Street that has cages full of live snakes ready for human consumption. This is the only shop remaining liao..
There are about 5 cages full of snakes. There are cobras and also black snakes with yellow bands.
For a thousand Baht or less they will slit a live snake along its belly and drain the blood into a cup for you to drink. It is mixed with honey and whisky to make it more palatable. The gall bladder is also eaten. A large cobra costs 1000 Baht, a small one 500 Baht and the black and yellow snakes can be had for the bargain price of 300 Baht.

The meat from the dead snakes is made into soup and sold for 150 Baht a bowl. The skins are made into belts and wallets, etc.

Bun Kun Pu
This restaurant is definitely worthy of a mention. The cuisine is from the North-East of Thailand in the Isaan region but has been modified to suit the taste of southern Thais. The Som Tum (papaya salad) is very good as are all the other dishes. As well as being very good, it is also very cheap.
It is located on Prachathipat Road just a few yards from Suphasarnrangsan Road on the left-hand side.
