CENTRAL EARMARKING B 10b TO GROW ABROAD : Indonesia, Vietnam Philippines in plans

The Central Group plans to invest 10 billion baht to expand its hotel and shopping centre businesses in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines over five years. Suthikiati Chirathivat, vice-chairman of the Central Group and also executive chairman of Central Plaza Hotel, said the company planned to open a Central hotel at each of the shopping plazas to be developed by affiliate Central Retail Corporation overseas.

The first prospective location for a city hotel at a shopping plaza is probably Indonesia, followed by Vietnam. The new hotel in Jakarta would have 200-300 rooms and could able to create about 300-450 jobs, he said.

Mr Suthikiati said that according to the group's survey, there is a huge potential for the hotel business in Jakarta because there are no big hotel chains located at large shopping complexes in the capital.

``Though, there are many international chains providing services there, we are confident that we can compete with them because we have been in the hotel business for 27 years and we have already competed with all of the chains in Thailand.''

He added that the company was in the process of considering the details of the expansion plan for its hotels in markets abroad. Given Central's experience in Thailand, he said the company had very capable executives, who were well suited and skilled for a competitive marketplace.

Apart from the Central Group, other large Thai investors in Indonesia include Banpu Plc in mining, the Charoen Pokphand Group in agribusiness and PTT Plc in energy development.

The value of investments from Thai operators in Indonesia was estimated at $65 billion by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in an address on Thursday in Bangkok.

A market analyst at Central Retail Corp said Indonesia was attractive for investment because of its large population of more than 200 million, an improving business environment and economy.

``Furthermore, the Indonesian hotel industry is less competitive as there are only small hotels available at retail sites,'' said Mr Suthikiati.

Meanwhile, Mr Suthikiati said the company would continue its domestic hotel expansion plan, signing a contract with Siam Commercial Bank for a 2.5-billion-baht loan tomorrow.

The funds will be used to build a five-star hotel with 505 guest rooms at the Central World site in Bangkok, which is scheduled to be opened in late 2007, targeting the Mice (meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition) market.

Sales of the five core businesses of the Central Group of companies in the year 2005 are expected to grow by 14% from the same period last year. The company declined to disclose the actual figure.

Central projects its food business to grow by 20.6%, followed by property development at 14%, retailing at 13.5%, trading business at 12% and hotels 3.5%.

Mr Suthikiati explained that the growth of the hotel business had been modest because the company had to delay on the opening of its five-star, 192-room Central Krabi Bay Resort.

The company will hold a soft opening for part of the Krabi property starting tomorrow.

Just got back from Jkt and here is my FR.
Arrive Jkt monday morning, was booked to stay at mercure hotel along hayam wuruk because this place is located right where the action is so no need to waste time travelling. Had a meeting at 3.30 so I thought got time to cheong massage. Took a taxi from the airport to the hotel and guess what..took me a full 2 hours to reach there! Man..traffic in jkt is really bad! JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- The threat of terrorist attacks targeting Westerners over the Christmas and New Year holidays is high, the U.S. embassy said Thursday, warning of possible kidnappings, shootings or suicide bombings.

Maps and explosives obtained in a police raid on a terrorist's hideout last month indicated the al-Qaida-linked militant group Jemaah Islamiyah was in the advanced stages of planning attacks, the embassy said in an e-mailed message to citizens.

Indonesian authorities also warned recently that Islamic extremists may be planning to kidnap foreigners over the holidays, and a recently discovered Web site provided step-by-step instructions on how to gun down Westerners in the streets of Jakarta.

"The embassy reminds Americans that in recent years terrorist attacks have occurred in Indonesia during the Christmas and New Year's holiday season," the embassy said, calling on citizens to remain vigilant and to vary the routes and times of their daily activities.

"The possibility of terrorist attacks appears even higher this year," the embassy said.

The world's most populous Muslim nation has been hit by five suicide bombings targeting Western interests since 2002, the most recent on the resort island of Bali three months ago.

In all, 242 people have been killed, many of them foreigners.

Indonesian authorities have warned repeatedly that fresh strikes were being planned, saying maps and dozens of bombs were discovered in the hideout of Azhari bin Husin - who was killed in a Nov. 9 police raid.

They also found a videotape of a hooded terrorist who threatened to attack Americans, Australians, Italians and British citizens.

It had taken me even longer than that more than once....3 hours in horrendous conditions; though its not by cab as my Jkt buddy always picked me up or send his driver if he's indisposed.
These days, whenever I was timed to arrive during peak hours, I would not tell my buddy my ETA but instead took the public transport which averages one and a half hours. Its rather simply, comfortable and low cost too, and most of all, it saves time. First, take a Blok M bound fully air-con Airport Bus for Rp10,000 but drop off at the first Busway stop. Take the busway the rest of the way to Kota, zipping along its dedicated lane whilst the Jkt traffic snail crawls woefully besides you.

Thats a smart way to travel, provided you move around light. I usually carry alot of stuff and a limo or cab is the more convenient way. Best time to travel is to arrive at night say after 9pm, therefore missing the traffic jams.

At the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in the capital of the world's most populous Muslim nation, a sleighful of Santas have been descending on cars as they enter the grounds in a bid to thwart potential Islamic extremist attacks.

Oscar, chief of the security guards, told AFP that guests had commented favourably on the hour-long stunt during which cheery hotel staff trained for bomb-hunting this week manned hand-held mirrors and metal-detecting wands.

"It makes visitors less tense," he cited a guest as saying.

Indonesia is in lockdown mode ahead of Christmas amid scaled-up warnings of bombings or kidnappings.

Tens of thousands of police have marched out across the sprawling archipelago nation in anticipation of violence after Indonesian police cornered and killed Malaysian master bombmaker Azahari Husin last month.

Nineteen people were killed in a coordinated nationwide bombing campaign targeting churches and priests on Christmas Eve in 2000.

The attacks were the first major offensive blamed on the Jemaah Islamiyah network, of which Azahari was a key member.

Been reading this thread for a while and figured I should contribute to all mongers.
