During old Lee's time, communism was a serious threat. N also China was poor economically & backdated in its military arsenal. Couple with our not so friendly neighbouring countries, he did the right thing in having strong ties with USA & Israel.

Times has changed. Obama tried to contain China by rallying Asia countries but failed.

Now USA got more than enough internal problem of its own. Emphasis n interest in "Rebalancing Asia" may wane.

So our current leaders seem to have placed the bet on the wrong country. Not very smart move.

When Russia rolled their thanks into Crimea, USA & UN only kpkb, meted out some economic sanction measures. Now Crimea is annexed by Russia.

So dun hope that this far away super power will do much if Singapore is indeed invaded 1 day.

We can only defend this small island ourselves. We have no oil fields like Kuwait that USA deems important enough to send in their aircraft carriers, tanks n troops to help.

We also do not have a treaty with USA like what Taiwan has that USA will help defend in the case of an invasion.

Even Taiwan can't be 100% sure if USA will honour their treaty n come save their ass when China invades.
