Haze causes big drop in visitors to Chiang Rai
Report from The Nation dated 29 February 2012 :-
Haze causes big drop in visitors to Chiang Rai The haze problem in the northern provinces has reduced tourist numbers to Chiang Rai by more than 20 per cent and is likely result in a continuing downward trend if the problem persists, according to Chiang Rai Tourism Council president Somkiat Chuentheerawong. Provincial workers have been spraying water into the air in several locations throughout the province to reduce dust particle levels and the situation appears to be improving. Particulate levels, earlier showing the highest concentration in the region at almost 300 micrograms per cubic metre had dropped and the distinctive odour of burnt forests and fields was fading, but grey smog was still lingering. Somkiat said the impact of the haze, caused by seasonal forest and farmland fires, had started to affect the tourism business in the province, with the number of visitors falling by more than 20 per cent compared with the same period last year. The number is expected to decline even further if the situation does not improve soon. He urged Chiang Rai farmers to stop preparing their fields for the new round of crops by burning off last year's ground cover and not to undertake any other open air burning activities. The authorities have been asked to take strict measures against violators. ----- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Report from The Nation dated 1 March 2012 :-
Thick smog hangs over North, Northeast Several provinces in the North and Northeast are still under thick smog with an increasing number of people suffering from eye irritation and respiratory problems. Meanwhile, Chiang Rai has lost some 20 per cent of its tourists, and more and more people are seeking treatment for red eye. In Chiang Mai, farmers living in tambon Mae Taeng have reported that bears, forced out of the wilderness by the smog, are hunting their animals. So far, these wild bears have killed 30 chickens and a dog, and farmers have set up guard to protect their stock. Fur found tangled in barbed wire is pending verification by Chiang Mai University, senior district official Chaiyakan Suwan said. "If the animals are sun bears or honey bears the risk will become greater," he said, adding that the smog could also prompt tigers and other predators to hunt farm animals or come closer to the villages. In Lampang's Mae Moh district, three kindergarteners have been hospitalised for respiratory problems and eye irritation. Results from air qualitychecking stations under the Department of Pollution Control show that the density of particles and dust detected at three locations in Lampang - two in Mae Moh and one in Muang district - had exceeded safety limits. The smog in the North is coming from wildfires as well as manmade fires in two districts in Chiang Rai as well as Mae Hong Son's Pai district in addition to neighbouring countries. The smog in the Northeast is caused by fires in Phu Kheo and Phu Lan Kha mountain ranges in Chaiyaphum province, where some 10,000rai of forestland has been set ablaze. Chief of the Chiang Rai tourism office, Somkiat Chuentheerawong, has called on residents to stop setting fires because the province is losing tourists. Meanwhile, fire trucks have been spraying water to reduce the effect of smog in residential areas, while cloudseeding operations are underway in nine provinces including Lamphun, Phrae and Phayao. ----- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

1 night CNX
Got in late last night 2330, got window of opportunity again (as side dish only driving up morning). So asked airport cabbie (voucher anywhere only thb120 in a comfortable midi taxi) to wait me 5mins for checking in hotel - before go to agg bar scene in loi kroh stretch.
Not been there before, so he dropped me in front of this (forgot name ...with X sounding name) 3 storey agg place next to small Shamrock bar. Climbed 3 flight of stairs, to pay entrance coupon thb150 for beer. 2 bikini gals pretended to do some sex act with farang customer. Few gals CMI, with quite a few farangs around circular bar area. Quick exit, as didn't do anything for me and it was eating into my quality time (0030). Walked across beer bars, quiet night nothing like Patts or Bkk. But CNX is a diff chill out scene. Popped by 8 Dwarfs, as spied some not bad gals sitting at bar area. Found out this is owned by a sinkie (H). Closed in on 2 gals from Bkk free lancing in CNX (you would think reverse is true). Here only past week, still new to CNX ways. Cut go chase. Bf thb400, LT 2.5k (ST 1.5) one if 2 as she spoke angrit. Just freshly broke up with thai guy last month. In short, good lay and looks bordering 6.5. Had to 'clean up' room before my gal arrived at 1030. Threw out rubbers outside room, as cleaners not due yet. Cover tracks, and my ass. Check out beer bars, maybe can suss out a couple who may suit you. Not loud agg bars, but more chill out scene. I was lucky too as gals were not commercial sex hardened types (if you know what I mean). But mamasans were smooth characters.

I remember I had some wild night with two of working in Star XIX. Amazingly, every time when I drop by, both which I tried before is not there, either not working or gone with customer. And the papasan there seems like a katoey. Didn't know you also managed to find gems in the bar area. Seems you enjoying loi kroh now. Just a update on weather in CNX, past few evenings, night has been raining, while hot during the day time. Raining just stopped 1 hour ago, and I'm sure given it raining everyday, slowly the haze will gone. |
