I dunno about the JB scene...... but there was a reported case many years ago. A Singaporean man was caught in a hotel room with a thai lady in Kota Baru Kelantan by their religious police. Both of them were not muslims.
However the man was married and both were on their way to Hatyai to register their marriage.
This reason cut no ice with the Kelantan authorities as they were ruled by the opposition PAS at that time and sharia laws apply. Even attempted intervention by SG MFA and the Malaysian federal govt failed to get them off the hook.
And both were sentenced to be caned in public. This incident was widely reported in the media and created quite an uproar..... as both the man & woman were not muslims.... and both were oso foreigners who should not be subjected to sharia laws.
