Bro, I checked the Tiger website for the flight schedule this morning, and the 1.25pm flight still on leh...the flight disruption page also empty..

But true abt their unreliability.. they like to cancel/postpone like nobody business lidat.. But we also lan lan if prefer to fly up instead of taking the 14hr bus trip up..

Anyway, i asked some buddies in HDY and they say the water down a bit liao.. and they hoping no more rain so tat the flood will recede.. but will have to clean out all the mud and rebuild lo.. think will take a few weeks for the situation to return to before.. In the meantime, its good to pick up bargains now if you dun mind the mud and mess..

Dun be too trusting of their website. I had a colleague who booked a flight online and received an sms 2 hours later that the flight was cancelled after he had made payment. Apparently this flight had been cancelled but they still let him make the booking. And he could not get a refund for the cancellation. Instead they asked him to take another similar flight leaving 2 days later which he was unable to so he had to forfeit his ticket.

We got the ticks cheaper.. Ya, got bargains on accomodation, food and puyings. Not to mention more stocks! but i tot if tiger cancelled the flight themselves, then they have to pay us back if we dun fly another day? This is akin to daylight robbery!

Military sets up flood centre in Hat Yai

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 4 November 2010 :-

Military sets up flood centre in Hat Yai

The Ministry of Defence and the Royal Thai Armed Forces have jointly set up a flood relief centre at the air force base in Hat Yai to provide assistance to people affected by the flooding, Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said on Wednesday.

The navy has sent its helicopter carrier HTMS Chakkri Naruebet to Songkhla, while the army has provided six helicopters and the air force has made available a C130 aircraft for the flood relief mission, said Gen Prawit.

The armed forces have also set up three field kitchens with the capacity to feed 18,000 people each meal.

Eight jet-skis will also be sent to Hat Yai to help flood victims in areas where water currents are too strong and flat-bottomed boats cannot reach them, the minister said.

Huge challenge ahead for Hatyai

Report from The Nationdated Thursday 4 November 2010 :-

Huge challenge ahead for Hatyai - Army plays major role in providing relief; Flood waters in Hat Yai start receding; Residents begin travelling, buying rations; Damage sustained estimated at Bt10 billion

The flood-water level in hardest-hit Hat Yai district in Songkhla has subsided, but the enormous task of relieving affected residents of their hardship lies ahead.

In a 24-hour stretch, eight to 10 people are reported to have drowned, including an official with a local administrative body in Chana district who went missing on Tuesday after going out on a relief mission. The body of the unnamed official was retrieved yesterday, not far from where his boat capsized.

Law and order have been largely maintained, with constant patrols by police and volunteers, but minor looting was reported and caught on camera after a few similar incidents took place earlier. Meanwhile, residents have begun buying and stockpiling rations and household supplies now that they can travel and a number of shops have reopened. There are no reports about hoarding of essential supplies.

The flood water level in Kim Yong and Santisuk markets in downtown Hat Yai decreased to 50 centimetres overnight on Tuesday from the reported peak of two-three metres. The average flood level in the entire urban area was 1.5 metres last night.

Mayor Phrai Phatthano estimated that the damage sustained by Hat Yai amounted to Bt10 billion. However, everything should return to normal in the next few days if there is no more rain.

Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senniam said floodwater should be drained out of Songkhla province within seven days and that it should take two months to complete repairs and restoration work.

The Prince of Songkhla University compound has been packed with people seeking help during the crisis, as it served as both a rally and a pick-up point for relief supplies, and its hospital as a medical service centre.

Electricity is now available in certain areas except Kim Yong market and adjacent areas and mobile-phone operators are fixing their infrastructure to make signals available in the same coverage areas as before the floods hit.

Relief supplies have been distributed to residents throughout flooded areas, through relief agencies, volunteer groups and teams of celebrities. Jet-skis have been used to reach homes in crowded residential areas or in shallow water where large boats could not travel.

The Army has dispatched a 10,000-strong relief force, comprising 600 trucks, 200 flat-bottom boats and 30 mobile military medical teams to the South to supplement relief efforts being provided by Army units based in the region.

The official damage report by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said the floods in the South had affected 292,744 people in 79,902 households in 10 provinces.

A weather report said the storms had changed direction towards Cambodia and Vietnam but would still cause heavy rain in coastal provinces on the Gulf of Thailand. Residents living by canals or in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert for flash floods.

The government's war room on flood relief said 15,000 boats of all kinds had been mobilised and dispatched to affected areas in the South, while another 11,000 survival kits from the government had been distributed.

Today Straits Times reported 100 Singaporeans could be stranded in Hatyai. Some brothers who posted here not long ago who made the journey, maybe one of them. Wish them a safe return. I am sure they will have many things to say about the flood.

Re: Hatyai,Thailand For Sawadee Newbies

the flood has already recede since yesterday evening around 7pm. hatyai city is now dry again. electricity start running at 11pm yesterday but clean water is still not flowing from the tap at the moment. The problem is that alot of shop and restaurant still remain closed. There is no tuk tuk around probably due to being damage during the flood. Lee garden plaza basement 1 and underground carparks is still filled with water, the same goes for robinson and novotel hotel basement. from my point of view it might need to take at least 2 months for things to go back to normal.

Hat Yai 'big clean up' begins
Published: 4/11/2010 at 01:34 PM
Online news:

Hat Yai began a "Big Clean Up" on Thursday as economic damage from the flooding in the southern tourist city was said to be at least 10 billion baht.

Vice chairman of the Songkhla Chamber of Commerce Kwispong Sirithananontsakul said the floodwater was as much as three metres deep, destroying business and tourism areas of the city, including the famous shopping destination Kim Yong market, hotels, restaurants, showrooms of all car dealers, department stores and retail shops, said Mr Kwispong.

“Even though the floodwaters will drain from Hat Yai in just a few days, the damage will not be less than that of the 2000 floods, which hit the city for several days.

"Nearly every kind of business in Hat Yai was affected by the flooding then,” he said, estimarting the current damage at at least 10 billion baht.

Chairman of Hat Yai and Songkhla Hotels Association Somchart Pimthanapoonporn took the same tone, saying 90 per cent of hotels and serviced apartments in Hat Yai were affected.

Several leading hotels, such as Novotel, Lee Gardens, the Regency and Sakura Grand View, were damaged.

Losses to the private sector were estimated at 10 billion baht at the least, he said.

Hotel rooms had been been booked out fully in advance from Nov 4-7, by people from India because the period is their long holiday. The bookings were all cancelled due to the floods, he added.

Hat Yai Mayor Prai Pattano on Thursday morning chaired the “Hat Yai Big Clean Up”, as the city is now full of garbage and debris left by the floods. The activity attracted civil servants, tradesmen, local residents and university students.

Mr Prai said he hoped the southern tourist city could return to normal in three days.
